recording track laps via gps

So I would like to know if and how you guys record your laps at the track. Me first.

I've tried it the second time I was at the track but I got bad info. I'm using an android apps. Gpsspeedometer gives a bad gpx file (missing the ending tags).

Recently I found 'my tracks' and 'gpslogger' that allow you to set the rate at which your device samples your position. Going to test them out today and use the better of the two at the track tomorrow.

i have trackmaster app for android but the signal has to be consistent which means it cant be inside the suit (doesn't get gps through that meat bag of a body) or has to be on your back or on the bike somewhere. they have super fancy gauges with gps built in that manages all that **** for you... you can also have someone stand next to start/finish with a stopwatch.

if you are racing they time laps for you

I have tried them all. The gps on phones just plain out sucks for this and the setup is picky. See here for a setup using trackmasters that has been vetted.

Next season, if I have any $$ left, I am going to upgrade my contour the gps model. I was told it was pretty good for this and takes out a lot of the complexity to match it with the video.

I kinda went full on and got the XT Racing GPX Pro 8. Expensive as hell but I got rid of my OEM Gauge cluster so selling that will at least recoup some dollar back. Reason I went all out is cause 1= I don't wanna mount my phone on the bike. As Alex said, inside suit is no go. Go pro clusters the bike enough, I don't wanna mount another thing on it. 2= I didn't wanna go beacon route. I know I'll end up losing them or forgetting them on track constantly.

I wired the GPX in to be powered off of the bike. It shows me lap times (duh), throttle %, gear position, RPMs, Brake on/off, Speed. Do I need all that? Nah... Is it awesome? yes.

Haha sounds awesome. My phone didn't do to good, it was very intermittent but much better than the data I got before. I think I can record lap times, and average speeds. No instantaneous speeds though. I'll pull up the info now and mess with it.

e;\ seems like my lap times are in the 1:40's. 3 track days so far.

What is the difference between gpx pro 4 and 8? Except $100 price difference.
Are there any other products that allow for removing of stock gauges?

I believe 8 has 8 data inputs while 4 has 4. if 4 is all you need just go for that one.

there's other units like gpx but there's also full on dashboards. they look more like gauge clusters which is pretty cool. I didn't research much at the time and I wasn't planing on replacing my dashboard. If i did it again I'd totally get a full on race dashboard.

Starlane comes to mind.. They are crazy expensive though. Kevin showed me a brand once they look pretty cool and like half the price of starlane. Forgot what it was.

If you're planning on using your iPhone, make sure to buy an external GPS receiver as the iPhone hardware is too slow for accurate readings.

The iphone is ok for your canyon stuff but not the track. I reviewed some of my sessions and went 200mph. lol Hans is right, the lag in the GPS is just not accurate enough. However, it is better than nothing.

Yep, me and a riding buddy both use that app on our Sunday rides. Depending on your phones GPS lag it does an ok job for canyons. His shows 150mph every now and then when we are in the hills of the KY. I use it for iphone and it's the same deal.

You need 10Hz for accuracy,

a phone MIGHT give 1Hz... between dropouts.

there is a 10% error right there and when you are chasing 1/10ths a phone is as good as **** on a bull.

A buddy of mine has the GPS version of the contour camera. He says the GPS telemetry is amazing (for a camera) but has to be put together via software after the fact. I will ask him to give me the lowdown on that and post an update.

Now that you have the unit, you can make it portable. You don't need the software anymore. My company offers a cloud version, authorized by Q-starz.

I have not used this QStarz gps & QRacing software yet but will be at Barbs on the 30th Dec, and Collie 20th Jan.
Hopefully i can import all the old racechrono data, compare previous cbr(MC41) laps with Ninja and a cbr250rr(MC22), and some testing between different riders swapping bikes.
