Squids?

Are there two types of squids? Hardshell (with helmet and no other gear) and softshell (no helmet, no gear, flipflops).

And just exactly what do you call the wide load squidette in a thong with cheeks jiggling off the sides of the rear seat?

Inquiring minds wanna know.

I pity that bike. How would you like to be the next person to jump on the back of that bike for a ride.

I would say that there is only one type and that it depends more on the attitude than on the protecting gear.

Millions ride well but unprotected in poor countries and are not squids.

Copied from http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=squid

"'Squid' is a contraction of "Squirrelly Kid", and comes from So Cal racers who were also involved in the Surfer culture.

Though the term is now widely used to describe street riders of questionable cornering skill, questionable judgement in demonstrations of horsepower and braking, questionable judgement in the protective clothing worn, and very questionable judgement in his/her friends, the meaning was actually developed at the racetrack.

Back in the day before trackdays (an organized event to allow anyone with a motorcycle and the price of admission to gain familiarity with a racetrack and learn to ride faster, more safely than on the street) were common and new racers frequently had no track experience - hence their unpredictable behavior and unsteady lines led to them being labelled "squirrelly", as unpredictable surfers (or surfing conditions or surfing equipment) were also called.

From there, the term made it to the canyons of Southern California (a popular means to risk one's hide while demonstrating riding skill at speeds well over the posted limit), then out to the rest of the world that reads about So Cal in magazines and apparently strives to be just like So Cal."

I'm probably what most of you consider a squid. The only gear I have is a helmet and a pair of gloves. I ride around town modestly as a commuter in my t-shirt and jeans. I don't consider myself as a squid, however. Feel free to call me hard headed though.

I do want to take a trip to Santa Barbara, but I'd want to be wearing full gears when I do that. And sadly I don't want to buy gear that would leave me needing more gear, so I want to buy leathers. And sadly, I don't want to buy cheap leathers, so I want to get A*s leathers. And sadly, A*s leathers are out of my budget at the moment. So sadly, no trip to Santa Barbara in the near future.

Went to the beach Sunday and saw more than 30 individual HD riders (not groups) riding along the ocean under the scalding Sun, keeping a steady low speed, and wearing absolutely no protecting gear, just street cloth and the eventual helmet-wanna-be.

Are those considered squids as well?

It seems that the term is more frequently applied to riders of SS 600s'

They're squids if they go out drinking and riding which happens a lot with the cruiser crowd.

Somebody on a supersport in a full one piece suit is still a squid if they're stunting and doing wheelies down the freeway in traffic (although most that engage in this behavior don't wear much gear)

Yes, I agree, that chain needs some tension.

I have one inviolable rule while riding.

I ALWAYS wear underwear.
