ran out of gas... again

had some meetings to attend today and wasn't paying attention to my gas situation. (no gauges installed at the moment) ran out of gas on surface streets sitting at a stop light and wound up having to push her about half a mile to get to the gas station... what a great work out, i think i should try it more often. great cardio! that makes 3 times i've ran out of gas this year. i'm on a roll.

Alex, since you don't have a gas gauge just do what us pregen owners do. Set your trip meter to zero when you fill up and refill when you hit 180 miles. That would be a safe distance that should allow you plenty in the tank to make it to a gas station. You may want to adjust the distance higher knowing your bikes mileage better.

once i have more time on my hands i plan on picking up a digital (trailtech) vapor odometer+speedo but until then she's just been my grocery getter. don't make long trips very often these days. repainted the tank so i have the tach and temp gauges out. was playing around with an extra cell phone i have as a gauge but every where i try to put it i can't make it look good so i decided to ditch the idea

if I were you, I'd fill up on a regular basis (every 3 days or so), until you get some sort of odometer on that bike... unless you like pushing.

honestly, not a bright move (and possibly very dangerous), riding a bike w/ no reserve on it w/o any way of knowing how much mileage you've got on it since the last fill up. get some gauges on there, pronto.

i can't say i disagree. i tried to make the oem speedo/odo work but the drive gear in the front fork is stripped so that's a no-go until i can repair it. i usually keep it topped off as it normally doesn't drop below 3/4 a tank since i haven't been driving far but it slipped my mind today (..... and the other times. well the first was because there wasn't a gas station for 30 miles and i over estimated how far i could make 1/8thish of a tank last... wound up getting a lift for the last mile... so close)

I've believed that I ran out of gas at some points and then, years later, found out that it was actually the tank forming a vacuum in the cold or after I let it cool for ~15 mins. It's happened to me several times and usually when the tank is empty enough for me to suspect that I'm out of gas.

In that case do what I used to do with my dirt bike and still do with my lawn mower...open the gas cap and look inside at the fuel level. BTW...use a flashlight to look inside but never a lighter...lol.

Lean the bike over there will still be gas in the other side of the tank saddle. Dead zone!

flashlight + opening tank cover

Maybe until you get gauges you could try to keep it topped off?

Just put a white dot on the front tyre and count how many times it goes past in a mile. Multiply by 180. Simple really

peeking in the tank has been my gas gauge lately. hard to tell accurately though, what looks like a full tank turns out to be almost nothing when you shake it.

as to the lighter... ! tell me you don't know first hand! haha

this was on a 93 fzr600, which is *supposed* to have a reserve. but apparently it has a nonstandard tank with the reserve made part of the main tank (was a track bike)... i should just always carry a container of gas on my back when i ride... sounds like a smart idea

If you have issues with other members or even other States in the U.S. please PM the individuals directly. Please try and stay on topic and if you do not have anything positive or constructive to add than do not post. Alex is being very patient with you. Other forums would have kicked you out long ago. For some reason the majority of your threads become locked/closed in a short amount of time.

1/4 mile later, out of breath, out of shape, arms cramped, going slightly uphill, i gave up

HAHA. oh man that was fun.

the story:

3 of us were heading through ortega hwy on the ninjas. even then i was horrible at gas management even WITH a gas gauge. made it almost all the way through but ran out at the lookout when i tried to start her back up. we tried siphoning some out of jeff's tank with some drinking straws put together but unfortunately we suck at sucking and both got gas in the mouth (NASTY!!!) couldn't get any gas to actually siphon for the life of us! wound up coasting down the hill, then hopped on the back of dustin's bike for the extra mile or two to the gas station... we felt retarded when we got back after jeff mentioned switching to reserve which we forgot about. luckily we didn't feel as stupid later on when we realized there was no reserve.

thanks guys. you both rock.

lesson learned: there is now a rubber tube in my backpack.

Not sure where this came from or why the need to post it but I can attest to alexs standards, there is nothing double about them. I know alex quite well have ridden with him and hung out with him and he only has one standard and that is a straight forward stand up guy, the type of grind that would do any thing and everything to help someone out. He is the type of person that most people try to be and those of us that know him are lucky to have a friend like that.

As for Him being a wordsmith being from pitsburg I can see where you would have an issue with that, see to the rest of us it's normal conversation so how about from now on when he uses a word with more then 2 syllables you just pm me and I'll explain the meaning to you that way you won't have to get a headache as your brain try's to comprehend it.

Ken, there is nothing standard on that bike! Not sure if you got to ride it but it is a freaking beast, basically get it over 4k and hold the **** on! Lol
