New 2012 Ninja 250

Hey guys so I just bought a 2012 candy lime green ninja 250 and i couldnt be happier with it. I realize there is a section for this and i posted there too i just need some advice ASAP! So I decided to remove the snorkel and shim the carb needles today and I am having some issues. I removed the snorkel yesterday and today i dug into the carbs. First I used 2 washers per carb and upon test drive I felt it was way too rich. It would bog down and stall at anything under 4-5 thousand rpms and anything under 1/2 throttle. the engine was fully warmed. so i went down to 1 washer and it made a huge difference but still it still is bogging around 3-4 thousand rpms unless i pretty much go WOT. The bike ran MUCH better yesterday with only the snorkel pulled. After reading all the success stories people have had with this mod i was a little confused and also concerned about running the bike with stock carbs and with the snorkel pulled. Ive decided that tomorrow Im gonna go back to stock carbs but cant stop thinking that riding with only the snorkel pulled might damage the engine if its running too lean. Im a new rider so I really dont know. I guess i could be one of the rare cases where the shimming mod doesnt work. So if anyone has any ideas or comments I would be very greatful. I guess my main question is if it would be ok to run the totally stock bike with only the snorkel removed ( I love the sound) Or if i will be forced to go back to completly stock. Sucks cuz i really wanted this mod to kick as much ass as everyone is saying. Thanks in advance!

running rich long term would cause excessive carbon build up, foul plugs.. unless something you do makes it extremely lean i wouldn't worry about playing around with those washers.

have you taken a micrometer to the washers to measure thickness? just a thought because i know they do vary some.

hey just out of my own curiosity and for future modding if I ever do something to run extremely lean how much riding would need to be done for engine damage? from what i understand running lean makes your engine run hotter so if the engine is run for lets say 30 minutes super lean but the fan never kicks in is it still ok?

I'm wondering about your shimming on the 2012, as I just got a 2012 and people are telling me I should shim the needles.

hey guys thx again for the nice comments. im having tons of fun on this thing i simply love it. @ saxnbass the shimming did end up working out great the bike runs better than ever. Turns out i was initially using the wrong size washers like a noob. 2 #4 washers under each needle and the snorkel removed on my 2012 worked wonders. super easy mod (just be careful not to strip the carb cover screws).

So what size washer did you use originally? And which size is the right size to use?

i originally used #6 washers by mistake because i didnt even notice the # 2 washers in the assorted washer pack from radio shack so i originally thought that the #6 washers were actually #4 washers. I was soon obviously incorrect and once i dug back into the bag i noticed the microscopic #2 washers. So #4 washers are the correct ones. The assorted washer pack at radio shack is $2.15 so super cheap.

So #4 is actually the size of the washer? If I go into a hardware store, that's what I'd look for?

yea thats all i know #4 washer. it measures 3mm around the edges. the washer is quite tiny. If there is a radioshack anywhere near you i would suggest just going there to play it safe. it is also available on their website. http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2103391
