Sprocket Change?

Experienced Modders,

I am strongly thinking about the 15/42 sprocket changes to my 2010. Can someone give me some insight to what to expect. I have searched the forums and found that my RPMs will drop and some acceleration will be lost. But the comfort at higher speeds should be better. Would shimming and desnorkling help with the acceleration that is lost? Anything else I should be thinking about to keep the current performance with the proposed sprocket change?

On a side note. My pre-gen feels so much better at higher speeds even though it has the 14/45 sprockets. Seems to have ALOT more lower and upper end power. (modded full exhaust and jet kit, everything else stock)

*Note* I am still under warranty on the 2010. I don't want to change anything that will void it.

I dont think the sprockets mean anything when it comes to the warranty.
I would buy 1 sprocket at a time. ya might not need both.
otherwise pipe and a kit and your good to go.

I just got off the phone with a local dealer....

They are so much trying to talk me out of the sprocket change. "You will loose all power", "You will need a new chain", bla bla bla ect... ect...

WTF. Am I missing all that when I read the forum posts here? I know I will loose some power/acceleration. But common, they are making it out like it will the end of the ninja as I know it. I see nothing about a chain swap in the DIY for sprocket changes.

Ugg....

If your bike is fairly new, a new sprocket wont hurt your chain. Like Kevin said, I'd try the front first. It isnt hard to do, the hardest part is getting the Damned Cotter pin off. I just did it last night to my pregen.

Your chain will be fine. Check the DIY's and see which sprocket change is for you. I think the rear is the easy one IMO
Yes a 41T rear only will go just fine without shortening the chain. you will have to slide the rear wheel back with the adjusters but theres plenty of room for adjustment.
Are you planning on modding the bike?? how much do you weigh?? How will I ride 90% of the time? Highway, track, city streets. these are things to consider before your sprocket choice.
15/42 is really tall IMO. But there are plenty here with that set and taller. (15/41)

Depending on sprockets and mods you MIGHT lose a little but its not catastrophic. (they are blowing smoke) With mods and the rear sprocket mine is ALOT quicker thru the quarter mile.

I put on a 15t front sprocket and it feels great. Idk if you would also want the rear sprocket swap unless your riding mostly highway and trying to save gas money. I don't feel like I would want to replace the rear sprocket to a smaller one because of loss of power. 15t front was the trick for me.

A 15t front = 42t rear
I would rather reduce ratational mass with a smaller rear. Hence the reason I have a 41t rear and stock up front.

I do plan on modding the bike and keeping it for as long as it repairable. I want my son to learn to ride on it when he is of age.

I am planning on these mods in this order.

Shim/snorkel removal (done)
New tires (front and back) 140 rear 110 front
Rear sprocket 42t (Edited... from 43)
Front sprocket 15t (maybe) depends on rear sprocket change comfort/feel
Full exhaust, most likely areaP and jet kit to go along with it.
Mostly other cosmetic mods

I figure since I was replacing the tires, it would be a good time to adjust any sprockets while I have the wheels off.

In another thread, there was a gent who said that his modded 08+ could race a pre-gen and possibly win. There is no way my stock 2010 will beat my pre-gen with full exhaust + jet kit on the low, mid or top end. I am just looking for similar performance from the 2010.

I am 5’ 11’ and 185lbs fully geared. I ride twisties most of the time but do enjoy a nice cruise with my HD buddies solo or (2UP) with the wife every now and then. There is some highway in there, but not much. In the end, this bike is being used by me as a learning tool until I am ready for a 600. But since I don’t plan on selling, I don’t mind spending the $$ to set it up for me. Once I get an office job (working at home right now), I will commuting most of the time on this bike. When and If that occurs, I will be commuting at least 45 minutes each way on highway.

That's true, I just went the cheaper route considering a front sprocket is less expensive than a rear. I did it because much of my reasoning for purchasing the bike was to save money.

Question

So after only 12k miles I am in need of a new chain. My question is, I know that sprockets should be changed with a new chain, but I just switched to a 15t front about 6k miles ago. What is the consensus on me leaving that one on and just putting a new rear sprocket on with a new chain?

Chris, do you know what speedo error I can expect with a 15t front sprocket?

Is this a test!?!?! lol

What can you expect for speedo change? None, for a 08+ 250, the speedo is driven mechanically from the front wheel.
