Shifting

What should the bike sound/ feel like I'm a new rider and not sure if being to harsh on my transmission

if you're shifting below redline you're not being harsh on your transmission...

lol i guess i didnt think that all the way out but ok so when i go to upshift i feel the engin rev up and the bike letches forword is there a way to eliminate that or am i just shifting too early

The order that you shift up is clutch in and roll off at the same time, shift up, let out the clutch slowly and roll on the throttle.

Depending on what speed you are going and what gear you are in, there is an exact RPM that the engine wants to be at. The closer you are to that RPM when you let out the clutch, the smoother the bike will feel. Then comes shifting techniques, but you don't need to worry about that for now.

Just concentrate on being smooth and getting a feel for the engine. After a while, you will just know without thinking where the engine wants to be from the sound, the vibration, and the way the engine responds to throttle.

gas, let off gas, clutch in, shift, clutch out, back on gas...

the last part you can match your gas when your letting off the clutch for smoother shifts... this should all happen in a split second too...

From dictionary: letch also lech (l ch). n. 1. A strong, especially sexual desire or craving.

When my bike letches forward I give it a very cold water bath.

Watch a youtube videos of a ninja 250 riding around to hear how people shift. I guess. It really isn't a hard concept to grasp. It is much easier than a manual transmission car. Ever drive one of those? Makes learning how to ride a motorcycle very easy.

Exactly. I said, it wasn't a hard concept to grasp. It is easy! But shifting on a motorcycle is soooo easy. My hands are smarter than my feet. lol. But I am purty good with manual transmissions. I am not a huge fan of sequential manuals though. I mean the bike is so fun because you can just flip you foot up and boom next gear. And clutchless up shifts are just so quick! But I like the manual trans in cars more because you can see the gear you want. Okay that doesn't really makes sense. But I also like how I can just easily skip a gear if need be. I don't know what I am saying. I just like manuals. Haha.

Jesus christ *most* everyone on this website makes motorcycle riding sound way more difficult than it actually is. All it takes is time on the bike and getting a real feel for your machine. You'll know what feels right and what feels wrong. Don't be afraid to experiment if something feels strange - 250s are extremely forgiving in this respect.

I find it easier to clutch-less shift up, once in 2nd or above put a slight pressure on the gear selector & roll off the throttle for a split second as you apply more pressure on the gear selector.
When you roll off the bike kicks up a gear, and does so very smoothly. it takes a small roll off (dip your knuckles 1/3 inch) & only for a split second. (even just pre-loading the gear selector & a short roll off will work 99% of the time, learn to do the roll off & more pressure simultaneously and it becomes second nature very quickly)

Otherwise roll off slightly, clutch in (don't let the RPMs jump too much), click up, get RPM to about 1k less than it was before rolling off, clutch out smoothly & roll on (this should also be split second, but takes longer than a clutchless)

It's just down to getting the feel of the bike & don't over think it

It's like anything new. At first it's hard. Because it is new. No one came bursting out of the womb with a throttle in one hand and a clutch lever in the other. (Rumor has it I came out with a stick in my hand, but I digress).

Like playing the piano, playing tennis, dribbling a basketball, with practice you will get it, and my guess is you will get it more quickly than it seems right now.

I shouldn't shout, but PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE is the operative technique here.

You're so right, but don't rock the boat too much or you'll get banned. Peace out.

As for newbies shifting it's the decibels that scare them. These bikes are built to be wound up, and shifted high in the rpm zone, especially my olden one.
