Is that "oil pump gear" issue something to be concerned about if I change the clutch pack or plates?

Any idea how much weight is safe to take off the flywheel?

Did you deck the head? If so, how much did you take off and was your cam chain tensioner okay with taking the slack out? I'm likely swapping to a manual tensioner because my stock one allows a lot of the 'kawi tick'.

Most importantly, do you have any good reading material for crank balancing? If I'm not 110% comfortable with it, I will leave all that stock. I just figure I'll read up on it now and see if there's anything I can do while it's apart. Like you say, while I'm in there, I might as well.

Most of my previous how-to's are all on newninja.com, but this happened while that site got abandoned and I was completely burned out on riding - never thought it could happen, but it most certainly did, so unfortunately from the cylinder removal down I don't have any documentation.

It's definitely something to think about yes. It's easy to check after installing the clutch, just make sure you check it, is all.

Nope, no idea what's safe to take off the flywheel, didn't modify it this time around.

No other mods to the head as I wanted to get a baseline for how much power the counter-balancer wasted.

Crank-balancing should be done by a professional with a machine. You can do it by hand, the old school method, but since this is such a high revving engine it's best to use the technology available to do it right. To disable the counter balancer is a pretty involved process to, and would be best if you took the bottom end to a professional to balance the crank and eliminate the counter balancer.

Found out the "kawi-tick" was the cam chain slapping the cylinder wall, and a second spot, much louder when it gets really bad, on the valve cover, so, get that tensioner in there ASAP....

Thanks for all the positive feedback.
