Ninja 250r 2006 help
Whatsup everyone i just bought my first motorcycle, its a 2006 ninja 250r, had a question and was wondering if someone could help me out. So the bike revs up and accelerates fine in the first 3 gears but when you get into 4th and 5th some times it starts making this grinding noise and dosent want to accelerate and the more gas you give it just grinds harder, is this a clutch problem or could it just be some junk in the carbs?

Hi Jim and welcome!
Can you make video with sound to show this pinging/grinding sound? When was last time chain-tension adjusted? How worn is front, rear sprocket and chain? A number is what we're after such as 2.4mm or 1 or 1.5% stretch from measuring distance between 24 chain-links. |

ill see if i can make a video i dont have a phone stand or anything, the chain looks good and is tight with a little slack. the grinding/rattling noise definantly sounds like its coming from the engine its hard to hear it over the sound of the wind but theres definantly some thing up with it. the rear sprockets don't look pointy or worn to bad ill have to look at the front ones and measure that chain when i get a chance (at work right now) the most descriptive i can be is that if i change into 5th gear it almost always immediatly starts making an odd grind/rattle and wont accelerate past about 50 or 60 but will maintain its current speed then goes away as soon as i drop down to 4th. or if im in 4th might start when i get to a certain speed goes away if i decelerate. also the rpms do not rise when when it starts with the rattle and i accelerate more (i have been riding for little over 2 weeks so forgive me if i dont make sense or this sounds confusing) |

Welcome, Jim!
Check your chain/chain slack first and go from there. You can for sure it's the chain if the grinding noise is in a "repeating pattern" and comes and goes with different speeds. Another way to tell for 100% sure is to oil the chain, if the sound goes away and comes back soon after... then you know. I hope it's something simple for you, but I my gut tells me you have multiple issues. But, I do hope, not for your sake. Best and happy riding!

thats good. im starting to worry that the guy who sold me the bike ripped me off. i got it for 1400 it had 10000 miles on it and looks brand new real clean no rust or anything, he just said that he had dropped it in the garage once. i had a friend who has been riding motrocycles for a long time ride it for me and hes telling me he thinks it may be just be some trash or junk in the carbs and more than likely not a huge issue

Sounds a lot like worn chain & sprockets. Tension can be tight, but you can still have longitudinal looseness in-line with chain-axis. Measure distance between 24-link pins, it should be 15+XXth". It's the XXth extra that we're interested in. Also take look at front sprocket-teeth too. Here's similar thread: https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=299699 |

i mean hes no expert but hes been riding for like 35 years on sportbikes so i think he would know something. anyway i will measure the chain and post that later tonight. if it is the sprocket its gotta be the front one because the sound is definitely not coming from the rear. and also the chain definitely looks fresh guy told me he cleaned and lubed it the night before i bought it and it doesn't look worn out but i will make sure. i am just noticing this now because like i said i've onlyy had it for about 2 or 3 weeks and have just become comfortable in traffic, at higher speeds, and gearing all the way up |

Could be caused by bad fuel or an obstruction in the carb. When the tank is dry, try to get a look inside to see if there is rust floating around. I'd completely drain the tank and floatbowls and refill with fresh gas (87 without ethanol if available) before doing much else. Look through this section - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Intake Info on draining the carbs is about half way down. |

What RPM ranges were you using? For moderate acceleration, I use 50-75% throttle and shift around 9000rpm. For maximum acceleration, I use 100% throttle and shift at 13000rpm.

Way too low, those RPMs are fine for steady speed cruising, but for acceleration you need to get into meat of power band in 8000-13000 range. Need to downshift 2-3 gears and rev it up so after upshift, engine is still above 8000rpms.
You still may have issues with worn chain and/or detonation though. Clogged carb passages causes low fuel-flow, resulting in lean air-fuel mixtures which causes detonation and results in holes melted in pistons. |

My ol' 2005 runs great whether keeping the RPM low, or getting into the powerband. I often short shift it when I'm not in a hurry to accelerate, and there is no detonation or any other sign of unhappiness. I just don't expect stellar acceleration down around 3,000-4,000 rpm.
Just use common sense, and pay attention to the sounds of your engine. |
