Coil Wiring
What are the colours of the wires running to the left and right coils (when sitting on the bike)? I'm redoing the wiring and the diagram shows a red wire from the kill switch going to both coils. And a green and a black wire from the IC. One going to each coil. Just wanted to confirm which goes where.

I don't think that it matters, both coils shoot at once (Wrong info, please read below).
What is important is the polarity that feeds the coil little tabs.

Are you sure?
I thought there was a firing order. And only during the TDC part of the stroke since that's when the a/f mixture reaches max compression. |

Sorry, you are correct, they fire 180 degrees apart; hence they follow a #1 - #2 sequence.
Red goes to both (connected to the lower tag in both coils). Black goes to coil #1 (left when seating in the bike). Green goes to coil #2 (right when seating in the bike). The ignition system is a "wasted spark" type. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasted_spark

Would you be able to visually confirm it, please? I have a feeling it was the other way around. Unless you already did. In which case, thank you!

Mine is a pre-gen, but I believe it works alike for the new-gens'. You are welcome Sorry about the initial confusion, I forgot the details of the wasted spark.

Another thing: The colors are reversed on the old and new gen wiring diagrams.

there are two separate coils which means it is not a wasted spark. if it was wasted spark they would only use a single coil and run through both plugs. the wiring harness is built with different length wires for the two coils. so with the harness in its correct position, only one set of wires will reach the far coil. polarity for the coil *really* doesn't matter since its a charge coil. when the field collapses it doesn't matter what polarity it was charged with, it still only has one escape. the spark plug. but they tell me its bad for the coil itself to run it backwards. i don't think that's true though.

I will have my race fairings off later, I can get some pics if it will help. Although I think Jason has you covered.

On a side note, I have been trying to diagnose the CDI overheating issue since my bike reads 1000 RPM over when it is warm outside. Based on my preliminary findings, I do not believe that there is an issue with my CDI but rather my Tachometer (YMMV). My secondary tach is receiving its signal from the spark plug wire and it is always reading correctly even when the tach in the dash is reading 1000 over. Since the stock tach signal wire is the same as the black wire going into the coil, I can assume that the plug is not firing any faster or slower than the CDI output signal. My current hypothesis is that the heat is causing the timebase in the tach (either crystal or ceramic resonator?) to drift. I will eventually try and post my findings in a more appropriate thread. PS does anyone have pics of the circuit board of the stock tachometer? |

No need for pics. The reason the parts diagram shows the Right coil on the left and vice versa is to show the proper splicing from the kill switch. I.e. the red wire goes from the kill switch first to the right coil and then to the left.
