Correct, anything with three wheels that does not lean will be steered just like a car. That's why I don't understand people who ride both. It would screw me up at the worst possible time.

Haha i saw my user name and I was like what! First I'm not in Sydney and I always wave. I do the 2 fingers to the side thing usually. If I'm feeling more liberal I'll do a full left hand wave too. Just sold my ninja so I won't be waving anymore until I get the next bike this season, maybe in a couple of months I hope.

I had someone way to me for the first time a few days ago, my heart just lit up with excitement.

I was so full of joy I had no time to react so I just nodded my head at them.

But I always wave now.

Is it rare to see a motorcycle on the road in the USA?

I just don't get this waving thing.

Just our way of saying hi to a fellow motorcyclist. And no, it's not rare around me.

I read this Cracked article (item #4) awhile back that addressed the wave, and linked to another article that summed up riders feelings.

I've seen motorists wave to each other on the road if we're on remote country backroads, just a way to say hi, or we're in the same vehicle, Jeep to Jeep, 4Runner to 4Runner, Bronco to Bronco etc.

Just a friendly Howdy while passing on the road.

In the southwest corner of Australia you nod to other motorcycle riders, avoid eye contact with HD riders and shake your head at scooters (particularly those wearing thongs).

On outback roads i nod to all traffic.

I didn't see any waving by motorcyclists in Thailand when I was there. I guess its hard to control the bike/scooter when you have the wife, 3 kids and a few chickens to contend with.

I notice 99% of sportsbikes wave but for lowriders its 50/50. Truck drivers do the same things in the Maritimes provinces of Canada but seems to be a rare elsewhere. I always wave other drivers in Maine and noticed they started waving back. Maybe if you start waving in Australia they will do the same

when I was in MD I would get lots of return waves. Back here in PA where majority are HD riders I don't get very many waves, it makes me sad.

I will admit that I have done the pull away wave for scooters on occasion, at quick glance I think bike, then I start the wave and realize its a scooter and quickly retract the wave while acting like I was actually just stretching or adjusting my helmet

I'm new to this forum, so the first time I saw the "you tag" used I thought ... Oh, ****!
1. The forum said my username was OK
2. There are old posts using the uname "Thorgrim", therefore there was a Thorgrim before I got here
3. He's not here now and his uname's been released
4. He was probably "banninated", and now people are going to think I'm That Guy. This is not going to go well for me.

Back to the wave, I'm also new-again on a bike after 30 years of no bike. The first time I got the "bro wave" of the left index finger pointing at the ground near the bike, I thought the guy was trying to tell me something was wrong at the back of my bike, maybe a strap from my tail bag had come loose. Didn't want a loose strap to end up in the wheel so I pulled over and checked everything, it's fine. Then three bikes in a row passed me going the other way, and all of them did the bro sign and I figured it out. Finally one guy shot me the peace sign (two spread fingers) of the bro wave and I made it mine. I also give the above-the-bars, palm forward, fingers spread vigorous wave side to side like one of Jerry's Kids now and then, but mostly to scooter drivers who are going 15mph over the limit in heavy traffic. It somehow seems appropriate.

TL,DR; I get it, now.

So around where I ride, I get a wave back from other sport bikes 9.9/10. Even Harleys and cruisers wave 8/10. But the guys on dual sports almost never wave

While I grant you that the title is amusing. I'm still not waving nor have I since that thread. I never had any trouble since. Hopefully, that was just one crybaby.

I live in MD and I wave to everyone! There's lots of cruisers around here and I'd say about 3 in every 4 wave back. There have been a couple times where I was turning or slowing down or doing something with my hands where I didn't want to take them off the handlebars but in that case I do a head nod. Which I feel weird about because I'm a girl and it feels very manly to nod at a guy. But I do it anyway. Sportbikers usually wave if they can and if there is more than 1 rider in a group they usually all wave. My wave is a tiny way of saying 'hey, if I saw anything happen to you, fellow 2wheeler, I'd have your back.'

I would not refuse to wave because of the style of bike someone is riding. I've definitely waved to scooters, woohoo!!

I waved to a scooter once. I was on a 2 lane road each direction and in the right lane. Scooter on right lane opposite came into view late as he passed a car. He flashed a wave, me not really paying attention instinctively waved back. By the time I realized, it was too late. I was thinking to myself, oh man, I hope no one saw that. I felt so used and violated. I had to take a shower when I got home.

^Hahaha. Sorry to hear that man.

Around where I live there are a lot of guys in their 30s-50s riding scooters, I feel sexy when I pass them on my black bike in my black gear, and then I don't wave to them... Too busy streaking by but I'll wave to someone on 2wheels as long as there is a motor between em. My friend calls my bike a lawn mower.... but I've never waved to anyone on a ride on lawnmower

Here in Los Angeles area almost everyone waves, I was riding through a canyon 2 days ago, passed a lot of guys on sport bikes, as well as cruisers and everything else. I think out of 20 people I passed on that day, only 1 did not wave. And yes, I waved to everyone.

Around here other riders wave back at 75% of the time in my experience. Probably higher than that.

I don't know if it varies by area or what. It's just a fun thing to do, I don't care if I don't get a wave back.

Had a weird waving experience today while out running some errands in town. I'd just made a right onto a broad 4-lane street with a 30mph limit, kicked it up into third and was bogging it up to the speed limit when I see that something I'd picked up visually in the oncoming farthest lane as a bicycle was turning into ... something else. When I got close enough to see better it was a guy who looked a lot like Cosmo Kramer - no helmet but wearing a pair of what looked like black-rimmed safety goggles and riding a something-kinda-like-a-bicycle but with a screaming tiny engine where the crank should be. The guy's hunched over the bars like a road-bicycle racer except he has elbows chicken-winged, his head up straight, and he's either grinning or grimacing enough I can see his clenched teeth. He's also wearing an unbuttoned checkered long-sleeve shirt and the tail's flapping horizontally behind him like a pennant on a sailboat.

I waved anyway. I figured from his mixed expression that he was either having the time of his life and probably wanted to share it, or was truly horrifically terrified and could use some reassurance. There was never a question of having the wave returned, though.

Members shouldn't be allowed to make posts such as the one above. It's like writing a great detective novel but not bothering to add the whodunit at the end. I really, REALLY want to know what the back-story to this little vignette is.

Grrr!

My best guess? Hipster, or wannabe hipster. I could have turned and caught him easily despite the traffic but then what would I do when I caught him? For all I know he was running away from a low-budget bank robbery.

Ooooph, not been on the forums a long time.
Seen this when I come back. Dunno if it's a different Gregular.
I wave all the time... well nod (it's hard to wave in uk), though I'm not a 250 anymore.
Think me being in a different country will make it hard to wave to OP
