Big fat rear tire question

Ive seen a forum related to this question on this site before, but can't seem to find it at the moment. Sorry.
Looking at getting a wider/bigger rear tire on the ninjette (purely for cosmetic reasons) and was wondering if anybody had any input to the best tire
I hear Pirelli Diablo Rosso II are the Sh*t! But am ready to be convinced otherwise.
Also wondering what is the biggest size tire I could get away with safely with the stock wheel/ swing arm etc.

You do not need a big fat rear tire. The 250 does not generate the horsepower needed to require one.

In fact, it will make your bike handle very badly. Just stick to the stock sizes, and you'll be glad you did.

I have seen it done on pregen bikes but after you do its pretty much a yard ornament because it is more work to ride than its worth. Plus you will put unnecessary strain on your engine.

I would love to put a skinnier rear tire on my bike if it didn't look retarded because the bike becomes so much more flickable. And I HAVE a fat rear tire already. Think about that. I miss the nimbleness of the 250.

I've tried both a 150/60 and a 150/70 and they both work fine. 150/70 is a Michelin pilot 3 for winter rainy street riding and the 150/60 Michelin power one is for summer canyon carving and beating up on the ninja 250 racers

On these bikes with such little HP the front tire is more important because it has to have a good feel that you like if you want to keep good corner speed.

I just go off a friends bike with bt-90's he thought they were great compared to the stock tires but I think they have a terrible feel compared to a burnt race tire I found in the corner of my shop from 2005. He loved the way that burnt Dunlop felt compared to his tires.

There is no point in using a bigger tire than the factory puts on bikes for the street. You lose flickability, especially on the ninja, and it looks out of place. But I guess you may be fine since it sounds like all you're going to do is ride to bike night and let people admire your big tire yo.

May as well do this. Go big or go home.

you will be going through a tyre every 2000kms but you will have heaps of grip (when warm)

Try looking in the wiki to see what has been said, done and proven about fat tires on a 250. You might find it useful.

If the tard behind the front desk or someone else tells you that you will need to lean your bike much more for the same speed and turn, or that your rear suspension will suck, he is right.

Common now.... the OP has 13 posts and admitted it was only for cosmetic reasons. Why all the hate?

rojoracing53 gave you the best response to your questions.

There has also been some 160's mounted up from the Indi riders but that required more invasive mods to be successful. Search around the forum here, your not the first to ask. There has even been custom swingarms made to allow for a 180.

If riders can extend the swingarm on a 2fiddy then you can have a phat tire, do et yo! And post some pics when your done please. If done tastefully and with alot of other performance mods, a 160 tire can look great on a 250. I did say alot of other mods right? lol

I assure you, no one here complains about the larger tire on this bike.

What is your goal for the looks of the bike?

I have a 150/70 on my bike right now. Bridgestone BT-023. People are exaggerating. Yes, it takes slightly more effort to turn, but not nearly as much as my R6. I actually found that the wider tire made it feel more planted in banked turns and exits. I just bought a 140 bias ply because it was cheaper and I'm likely going to sell the bike next year. If I had the money and I was going to keep the bike, I would get another BT 23. It's also lasted me 18k.

I love those Power 3s.

A nice fat tire (with extended swingarm) always gets the chicks. I see the hottest chicks on the back of extended fat tire rides. I've been thinking of getting a fat (car tire) and doing the one sided, extended look (just for the chicks). After all, isn't that why we get bikes, to get chicks. Chicks aren't into nimble bikes. They want burn out wheelie machines that look hot. It's all about "the look" with chicks. Chicks rock and they don't want to be seen on some skinny ass, wimpy rear tire bike. They want that fat tire so they look the part, hot, hot, hot.
