Back protectors

So i always see one pieces that have that hump thing in the upper back part of the suit, im assuming that is a back protector. Well i just bought a 2 piece sedici suit and there is no place to add something like that on. I can unzip the mesh part of the inside to an area that is just vacant between the leather and the mesh. But it is so large i dont think i could just add a back pad and have it stay in place.

It does have this foam pad but id hardly call it armor, and there is no zipper for me to get into that area to take it out and replace. There is also no front armor, just some spots of hard foam stuff and leather. So i was thinking i could get something like this

http://www.cyclegear.com/eng/product...est/web1000256

to wear under my jacket.

Any suggestions?

No, the hump on the back of race suits is referred to as a "speed hump" and not designed to protect your back. What you need to do is google "back protector insert" for a product that will fit in your suit or get one that is designed to be worn under the suit.

I would strongly lean toward a knox if you go for one that is not an insert.

I use an Icon Stryker (pic below) Vest under all my suits because there is either no chest armor or crap chest armor in most 1 and 2 piece suits. And as you have found, the foam pad insert in a lot of suits is pretty much a joke. The knox one is pretty comfy too under the suit if the icon is a bit much and they offer a more modular product. You can were just the back, just the front or both.

Icon Stryker

Knox (back and chest)

Great advice Chris.

I use an Alpinestars Bio Armor insert in my jacket, a great improvement over the stock foam padding.

the stryker looks like a solid deal. good reviews and a good price. knox looks good too but its basically the same price since i would want both the back and front armor so it would be around 130 euros (idk how much it is in dollars). so 130 dollars that i can go buy in person sounds good.

and what exactly does the speed hump do?

The stunters love them. The serious racers usually get something else.

I just checked out a bunch of back protectors and vests yesterday. The Icon looks cool and the price is good. It is only CE 1 rated however.

I also liked the A*'s version.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...ic-2-Vest.aspx

I didn't buy a back protector, got a cold weather jacket instead. I'm waiting to buy this.

try it on with the suit and helmet you are going to use, on the bike you are going to use it before you commit to it. (or buy from somewhere with a good return policy) i got a free protector with my suit but it was just slightly too big, really uncomfortable when it comes to actually racing in it but not something you notice when you just try it on without being in a racing position.

Also look into a back protector that isn't a "one and done" type of deal. I picked up a Knox Contour back protector since it's multi-use, really wasn't that expensive and it provides more coverage than forcefield.

I have the Alpinestars SMX Bionic 2 vest. It has a chest plate, a CE 2 back protector, is lightweight, breathable and with a low profile design, hardly adds any bulk at all under a jacket. One criticism is that there's no coccyx coverage.

The hump helps with aerodynamics, and protects your neck by preventing your head from touching the asphalt and being ringed forward, I say +1 on a force field ce lvl 2 back and ce lvl1 front, reusable but pricy

Forcefield also just came out with what they call the Race-Lite vest which you could look into. It's a zip on vest with a CE 2 back protector that is thinner and more flexible than the other back protectors they have.

I just noticed that last week. I'm wondering if I should sell my existing Forcefield protector and buy the new vest. My friend had many injuries spared last week because he was armored head to toe under his one piece. He was still critically injured at the neck, but who wouldn't be in a 60 mph cartwheel?

My only issue with Forcefield back protectors is that the protection isn't very big. That was my deciding factor in choosing the Knox over the Forcefield.

I've only used the Knox back armor for jackets. Forcefield covers plenty once you try it on. I shopped for protection for a while before I settled on the Pro Sub 4. I was comparing it to stuff available at Cycle Gear. None of the Alpinestars or Dainese felt comfortable to me.

The Contour is a strapped on back protector and it also covers the shoulder blades and a little more coverage on the back. I've never tried the slip in armor as I feel it'd move around in the event of a crash. But to each their own and something is better than nothing.

I was also going to suggest the Stryker vest. Greg has one and his is sized small. I'm sure he'll let you try it on. Should've asked when you were over lol

I just checked out this company after seeing one of their chest protectors in a magazine. Looks like some pretty serious gear, and worn by quite a few racers. Definitely worth checking out.

http://impactarmor.com/

Troy Corser credits his chest armor for saving his life after his BMW landed on top of him in a crash. Ouch!
