Well, I'm on the DL for 2 months...

So there I was riding my bicycle on my favorite trail and WHAM! There was a rock hidden by some leaves and I went down hard. At about 14 mph I hit the ground scraped my left side up real good and broke my collar bone and shoulder blade. I'm not looking for sympathy over this rather tell this story as a reminder that WEARING GEAR IS IMPORTANT! Shorts and a t-shirt didn't help at 14 mph on dirt so it won't help you at 60 mph on pavement either. Please my brother and sister riders, take the ego and politics out of it and wear your gear. Accidents happen. Have fun and be safe!

Thanks Snake! I have a good wife, family and friends taking care of me. I'm very grateful for them.

I love wearing my gear in the heat. Makes working outside for 8 hours in it (the heat, not my gear) like air conditioning haha

Sorry to read about your crash, here's to a speedy recovery!

Sorry to hear about your crash.

How would you assess your riding ability? I ask because I usually wear very little gear on my mountain bike. I rarely crash and when I do it's usually no big deal. I'm much more skilled than your average rider though, so I play by my own rules. I like to reassess what I'm doing once in a while though.

I wear full gear on my motorcycle on every ride. I think even if I was highly skilled on my motorcycle (which I'm not) I'd still always wear full gear. The consequences for messing up on a motorcycle are just so huge, that it just makes sense to have gear as a plan B for when your plan A (keeping tyre side down) fails.

First let me thank all of your kind thoughts. Really a great bunch of people here! To answer your question though, I'm slightly above average.

I don't wear crash-gear on my mtn bike, either. Bike helmet, but that's about it. I guess one reason is because I feel a lot more things are under my control on the mtn bike than on the motorcycle. No real cross-traffic on the trails! Occasionally oncoming riders but I can deal with that and you can see them most of the time.
