Please Look

Dear Cagers: Please look when backing up.

I was on my way to work when I saw a jeep pull a car length ahead of the white line at a red light. He came to a complete stop, so I parked directly behind the white line. 5 seconds later, his reverse lights come on and he begins to back up. I fumble for the horn, and ring it off just in time; but to no avail. He still smashes the front of my bike, and two weeks later, I'm still waiting on his insurance to pay the damages.

No injuries. The bike is fine, except that the front cowl is damaged and my headlight is no longer pointing in the right direction, which means that I can't ride my bike to work until it's fixed.

Ugh. That's got to be such a helpless feeling watching the car backing up toward your bike, with nothing you can do in time to get it out of the way. Glad you're OK.

Hope you are rolling again soon.

Bullocks!!!! that is just a dumb reason to have a bike hit. Shame on that driver.

Here is what I do. If I see the driver has blown the stop line. I give a car length in front of me and the cage. I also am on the very far left side of my lane so I can be clearly seen in the rear view and side mirror or bail into the other lane if need be.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Best of luck with quick repairs.

Yeah, I'm with Chris. If they go past the line into the intersection, I usually allow room for them to backup, whether I'm in my car or on the bike. I also usually come to a stop on the left as he said so there's a way out. Unfortunately, you can't trust other drivers to watch out for you or do the right thing. Gotta look out for yourself.

He has Farm Bureau. I am supposed to be getting a call back today (again).

I will admit, I thought the situation was a bit strange when he pulled up that far, but didn't think he was going to actually back up. I'll know what to watch for next time.

Just picked up the check.

I'm going to forgo professional repair and instead order a full body kit and install it myself. =)

I might post pics when I'm done; but by then the season will be over. :/

Leave extra room ahead of you and run the risk of the idiot behind you stopping in the space in front of you, you on the hood.

It's a catch 22.

True, but I always leave a car length or so, not so much because the guy in front might back up, but incase some other moron doesn't slow down in time. Keep an eye on the mirrors and give myself a chance to dart outta there instead of being squat.
