Stinky gloves?

Hello as someone who experiences frequent hyperhidrosis (sweating hands/feet) -- my gloves have developed quite an odor. I would say it's a mixture of old cheese, sour milk, and there's a distinct tinge of heavy metals, iron and maybe a titch of raw magnesium (multi-vitamins).

I've seen 'glove dryers' that blow air into gloves, boots etc to dry them out, but my gloves are never "wet" -- it's just the dampness over time and I think bacteria is growing on the leather producing the odor.

Does anyone have any "anti-glove-stink" techniques that I may have missed?

It's to the point where I take them off and walk into a store and I can see the cashier wrinkle their nose a bit.

Cologne doesn't kill the scent, it just makes it a little more masked.

Going to try and leave them baking in the sun when not in use, as the sun kills most types of bacteria. However the stink is on the inside so who knows...

sincerely, guy-who-reeks-of-stale-cheeses

Think parmesean with a hint of bleu and a little cottage cheese mixed in. (Room temp cottage cheese, it doesn't smell when it's cold.)

That should give you a pretty good idea of what I'm dealing with.

Putting the gloves on is like a resignation to sin.

Excuse me while I wash these gloves for the fourth time in boiling water.

okay I will try that again but these dang gloves smell worse than cat ass.

The smell is just the most evident problem.
Darkness and humidity are ideal conditions for fungi grow.
Both bacteria and fungi produce acids that will deteriorate the sewed thread.
Hence, your gloves can fail when you need their protection the most.

I put some light detergent in mine and turn them inside out then wash them. Then I rip a dryer sheet thing in half and put it in each glove and dry it for a bit. This usually gets the smell out...temporarily, but since I ride every day it comes back soon given the heat here. I also use febreeze for temporary relief...doesn't really help.

I've got some anti-odor shoe spray that I may try in the gloves as well.

You do the same thing with gloves as you do socks and underwear. You alternate and wash them regularly.

Having an alternate set or two of gloves and regularly cleaning them properly goes a long way, especially from a hygiene standpoint. Having a leather glove that breathes better than your current one is an option as well.

Leather can be carefully washed/cleaned with leather cleaner such as saddle soap or special leather cleaners. Most leather products have cleaning and maintenance instructions. If followed correctly can extend the life of the glove and keep smelly bacteria from building up.

This thread is thoroughly entertaining, thanks to @corksil's descriptions of the odor. Seriously, that predicament stinks.
Though cat butt isn't so bad. Cat pee? Uggggh. On that note, have you tried using a baking soda mixture? I had a pair of hiking boots that one of our cats soiled, and I soaked them in a baking soda solution. Totally did the trick, but the boots discolored some.

Activated charcoal
Baking soda

Clean the gloves inside and out and fill a sock with either baking soda or activated charcoal and place then in a large jar with the top open so the soda or charcoal can absorb the smell. Another option is to sprinkle baking soda inside the glove to absorb any odor.

Put them into a bag & into the freezer for an hour or 2 to kill the bacteria.

They will eventually start to smell again. I had a pair of $20 waterproof textile gloves that smelled so bad they'd almost make you retch, the lining would stick to my hands and leave them stinking after I wore them, freezing did the trick for about a week, throwing them into a -80c freezer for a couple of hours sorted it for a few weeks, but I eventually binned them.

Alright I will do my best to conclude this information.

Baking soda will absorb the smell, but not kill the bacteria causing the smell.

My best bet for slowing the destruction of the gloves due to bacterial injection destroying the leather on a molecular level is to leave the gloves in direct sunlight as frequently as possible to kill the surface bacteria and bake the odor out.

As for cleaning the gloves, straight from the dainese website...

Quote:
Leather gloves are best not washed, avoiding dirt from building up over time and using the Dainese Cleaning & Protection Kit to keep them soft and clean. Fabric gloves, in GORE-TEX® and in D-Dry®, however if a more in-depth cleaning is needed, Dainese recommends to wash them delicately in luke warm water (max. 40°C) and non-abrasive, softener free neutral soap. Then dry them in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and heat, making sure you hang them by their cuffs, with the fingertips pointing downwards. All said, only unless otherwise indicated on the garment label. All technical fabrics, including elasticized versions, must always be given a very delicate cleaning treatment. In particular high-tech fibres with mechanical properties must be treated with softener free, neutral detergents. Softeners can significantly weaken the waterproof and oil-proof surface treatments and even damage the resin coatings and multi-purpose membranes in Polyurethane and based on Polytetrafluoroethylene (i.e. PTFE – Teflon) usually applied on the backing of the fabric.
Sounds like a light solution of Dr Bonners soap and warm water with a hint of baking soda. Then dry them with a fan, hanging fingers down.

Other things to note...
-take off gloves before wanking to reduce the amount of sweat they are exposed to
-keep them in the freezer every night with the chicken breasts and frozen burritos
-cat ass is most certainly worse than cat piss
-pissing on the gloves to soften them and not cause blisters (excuse me I don't have soft hands)
-buy more gloves and don't wear the same pair erryday

These are the gloves I'm talking about... can't exactly turn them inside out...

Okay I think that about wraps it up. Let me know if I missed anything.

Because these cost me 250+ and they are no where near worn out.

Tomorrow I'll initiate the disinfection routine and report back with any sizeable findings.

They get the job done. Things tend to callous-up pretty quickly.

Goldbond is super good for helping with stinky feet and hands before they start to smell. If anyone gets new gear try that out...or even your work shoes.
As far as now couldn't you just wash them in a light soap and water mix and then rinse and let sit in the sun. If you have already sweat in them, which it sounds like you have since they got da funk, they shouldn't shrink or anything.

Yeah I realized I don't have the proper soap... but my plan is warm water, half a box of baking soda, dr bonners soap diluted, and then soak them for a few and gently knead the funk out of them under water then a rinse with clean water and hang them upside down.

Thanks dude, I didn't have time this evening but I've acquired the dr bonrars and a new tub of bicarbonate of soda.

Tomorrow's plan is to swap the old baking soda out of my fridge and swap the new box in, then use the old box for the cleaning procedure.

If anyone wants me to make a how-to-diy with pixorz, don't hesitate. It's not exactly rocket surgery... I think most people could figure it out without a diy guide..

Anyways, I appreciate it.
