Back in the Saddle Again!
I have found many articles in this forum to be very helpful and informative. It is really a wealth of information and I look forward to being a part of it.
As for myself, I have been a die hard Kawi fan since childhood and I spent many years chewing dirt with my KX125s. A friend once told me, "If I cut you, I bet you'd bleed green." He is a Suzuki guy, so what does he know. But the only street bikes I have ever owned are Ninjas. My first street bike was a Ninja 600R, then I had a couple of ZX6s. But I hadn't ridden for years (except for my friend's GSX-R 750 once in a while). Yes, I know... I hold my nose. I'm kidding, it's a nice bike. I recently decided to get back into riding and started to researching (BTW, I found ninjette.org to be a very good resource). My friend tried to get me to buy his GSX-R, but I wanted to get into something a bit more... well... GREEN!!! So I looked around and really liked the looks of the 2009 SE. So I test drove one and bought it on the spot. I don't care about impressing anyone by breaking the sound barrier or getting to 80 mph before I get out of in 3rd gear. I don't feel the need to go over 140 and get arrested on the spot. I just wanted something that looks good and has enough power to get to highway speeds fast enough so I don't get run over. These new 250s look soooo much better than they used to (in my opinion). I like that it gets such good gas milage and the price was nice too. I really like my 250 and can't wait until it is broken in. I am following the factory recommended break in and am keeping it under 6,000 RPM. Which is very hard form me to do. It feels like taking a bird for a walk on a leash. I WANT TO LET IT FREE!!! I may just take a long road trip up to the mountains and just get that out of the way. Sorry I got a bit carried away there and wrote a novel... Anyway, thank you for bringing me onboard. Aiken, SC. |

Aloha and welcome, Rick.
Have you seen the break in info in our wiki? Most say that you don't really need to follow Kawi's recommended break in procedure, but that's entirely up to you. My suggestion is to ride the bike as it needs to be ridden and change the oil often during the first 1k miles. |

I did read the many different views on break in. I have 'tried' to stay within the Manufacturer's break in parameters as best I can. But honestly, it is pretty unrealistic. But I vary my engine speed alot throughout all of the gears, and I don't 'get on it' but for very short bursts and only after it has thoroughly warmed up. That is the best I have been able to do.

Kelly, I love the subtile way you put things. When I got my Green Ninja, I rode it the way it needed to be ridden since Maine is not flat. Riding home from the dealer, it felt like I was crossing two mountain ranges. I let her rip and changed the oil and filter when I got home (50 miles) I changed the oil and filter five times until I hit 1000 miles---changed to synthetic, and now change every 2000 miles. The bike burns no oil and runs flawlessly. It also only gets highway miles--60 mph+ |

Thank you all for the welcome. Chris, I have lived in SC for about 10 yrs, but I am not actually a native. I am actually from Maine originally. That is where I spent most of my years motorcycling. So I can relate to riding the hills in Maine mentioned by Alex. But I do not regret moving for a second. I like the weather much better down here. We don't have to shovel/plow snow and it is not nearly so buggy either. If you are out in the woods up there in the spring/summer for any length of time, you will come out with about a pint less blood. I do miss snomobiling and downhill skiing sometimes though. But I just think of the shoveling and it passes quickly.
