just bought a 2009 ninja 250r with 500 miles *Concerns
Hi everyone,
I just bought an 09 ninja 250r with only 500 miles.. Im not sure how the previous owner rode the bike during the crucial break in period Should I keep the revs under 5k untill i reach 1000 miles??? The bike has a two bros exhaust installed and its the only mod.. I noticed that the idles bounces around quite a bit from 1.5 to 2.5 and is not very stable... Could there be an issue with this bike?? It seems to be a bit sluggish and doesnt accelerate as quickly as it should.. Could this be that its no broken in just yet?? |

Did you get any service records from the seller? Any oil changes?
If not, change the oil give it a good check over (since it new to you) and vary the rpms until breakin is complete. Everyone breaks in their bikes differently so you will get varied answers. There is a link somewhere to the breakin rides, I can't find it right now. I am sure someone will link it, before I can find it for you. Try running some seafoam through a tank of gas and see if the idle settles down. And lack of a break in will not make it sluggish. Most likely related to idle issues. (assuming the bike sat with gas, so has minor carb gum up) If that don't work, post again and we can try to help further.

ride it like you stole it
... jk ride it how you want. but the bouncing idle doesn't sound right. is it a full exhaust or a jet kit? it sounds like maybe its got a full exhaust and the guy tried to jet it but maybe didn't know what he was doing and desynced the carbs? or maybe only jetted ... one... carb? the break in period wouldn't make it idle like that. is the choke off? edit: oh its an 09 with only 500 miles? clean the carbs out. just my opinion but breakin is a load of crap. after 20 miles and the first few heat cycles there isn't much about it

ok.. now the bike seems to have developed a ticking sound coming from the engine..
At only 600 miles.. could the previous owner have messed up the motor with an improper break in??? |

Do you know anyone that works on bikes....sounds as if you need to get that thing checked out. Being a new rider---you may think you hear some weird sounds but they are "normal"- still get it checked out just to be on the safe side. The idle should not be bouncing around- sounds like a carb issue or a bad jett kit install. (discuss) The idle should stay at 1 place- usually 1500 rpms. What'd u pay for the bike?

The idle should not be bouncing around. Do a search on this forum and see what you could find out. Sounds like the carbs.

You need to sync the carbs I believe for the idle problem.
The slight ticking noise is common I believe. I think its the cam chain ticking, if you rev slightly from idle and then let it drop off youll probably hear it go tick tick tick for a second or so as the cam chain gets slack. At least thats my hypothesis. Im rebuilding my CCT today so I'll post back with info as to whether it helped or not.

i wouldnt be to concerned with a tick, mine will make some funky noises sometimes when its idling. heres what i would do if i had a idle issue as you do. 1st- make sure all the gas it had in it when you bought it is out and you got good fresh gas in the tank. 2nd- try adjusting the idle, get the bike good and warmed up, take it for a few min ride around the block, come back and let it idle.. if its not maintaining 1300-1500rpms adjust the idle screw to maintain it within that range.. its on the left side of the bike when sitting on it, above the front sprocket sorta, can be adjusted while sitting on the bike even. after that if the idle is still acting up, check the carb sync. also does it still have the snorkel in the airbox? its possible its been rejetted with the pipe and if so your idle mixture screws may be off also.

jets are what control the flow of fuel in the carburetors. they effect the fuel/air ratio. when you change things like your airbox or exhaust, it changes how much air can flow through the carbs. so to compensate that change in air, the fuel must be changed with different jets (the act of jetting, or rejetting if its already been done before) to maintain a specific fuel/air ratio. if you don't have a proper fuel/air ratio, you can have several bad effects ranging from lack of power, not firing properly/fully which can also lead to excessive backfiring, predetonation, overheating valves and plugs, and lots of other good stuff.

ok so ive figured out where the ticking is coming from......
Its coming straight from the motor.. right where the oil cap is.... =( its gotten louder since i did my first oil change... is my motor screwed???? It only has 800 miles on it. shes like brand new! Unless the previous owner rode the craap out of it. im depressed.. =( |

Get it checked out
Like others have said, get it professionally checked out. It is just possible the other person did not jet the bike and sold it because he couldn't fix it. Personally, that is why I would not purchase a bike that is modified - you never know if the other person did it correctly. On the other hand, that is another reason people recommend getting it professionally looked at prior to making the purchase. Seriously, take it to a professional and spend that extra $200 so you can sleep better at night.
