high rpm issue

New rider here!

So i have a 2012 ninja 250 stock everything and I'm having the issue with high rpm, 70mph @11krpm and 12krpm on hot days. I've been reading through the forums that it could be a faulty tach or the cdi. Although I read those have been correlated with the 08-10 ninja's.

Has anyone been successful in fixing this issue?

I'm going to clean the carbs this weekend, but I'm not sure if that causes high rpms.

Welcome Tim!

What is the issue? Bogging, stuttering, tach reading wrong, something else?

Hey Chris,

6 gear 70 mph @ 11k rpm and 12k rpm on hot days.

The bike runs fine, but it concerns me that the rpm is just too high compared to what I've been reading (6 gear 70mph @ 8-9k rpm).

I'm really trying to get to 80mph comfortably on the freeway, but I can't do that when I'm so close to redlining the bike. And I don't think I'm bogging or stuttering.

Any advice? Is my tach bad?

Welcome aboarde, Tim!

What gearing (# of teeth on front and rear sprocket) are you running?

You might compare the speedo reading with GPS speed using your smartphone.

The next obvious question is; What is your gearing? Stock is 14/45 fyi.

You could cover the tach with electrical tape.

does it sound any different when its hot and reading wrong compared to cold and reading correctly? if it sounds the same i would go with the black-tape-over-the-gauge method

so yeah the sprockets are stock 14/45. The speedometer is working correctly or very close to it. Any advice on what I should do?

Well, you might have one of those cdi's that read rpms higher when hot. If so, there really isn't a fix for it aside of replacement. The only other thing that I can think of off the top of my head is the choke, make sure the switch actually turns it on and off.

I just noticed while i was riding today that the tach would be a little sporadic, (moving back and forth in 8k to 9k rpm). It's not a smooth movement and I'm accelerating so there should be no reason it goes back down to 8k from 9. Is this a faulty tach?

Oh and about the choke, I'm going to adjust the thing this weekend, but I do know that on my bike the choke won't work until it's 3/4 - full pulled. Maybe this is the issue?

Hmmm... a sporadic tach is normally a sign of a battery problem. Could be as simple as one of the connections are loose or dirty. Have a peek there first, then test the battery itself.

Keep in mind that you're not redlining the bike. The engine is still turning the same speed it needs to for whatever speed your are traveling. Remember, there is a mechanical link from the rear wheel right through the chain to the transmission, the clutch, and then engine. All you're seeing on your gauges is measurement error if the numbers are off.

I have the same problem with mine, changing the cdi didn't help either, so i just ride by ear now and ignore the tach. get used to the sound of the engine, the gauge will vary with temp, but the engine is still working the same since nothing changed mechanically. Just go by ear, then ignore the tach all together. problem solved.

also, buying an R6 will cure the tach problem......

So I worked on the bike last weekend and found that nothing really helps. I could replace the tach, but I really don't want to do it lol.

At this point, I'm just going to ride. The tach must be faulty and I'm just gonna ignore it. It was a pain in the ass taking the bike apart and I wasted too much riding time!

Welcome, smaller rear sprocket might help too. I went to a 43 on the rear on my 09 and it did help.
