How bad a spill

Looking at a 250 to buy. What would it take do this kind of damage? Owner says just bumped.

lol..... right...... What scraped down the side of it? The rest of the bike spotless? I did something like that on my beater dirt bike coming out of my garage on the door frame.

Why can't people just be honest. He also tried to say he dropped it on its right side because he forgot to put the kick stand down...at least I didn't go see it in person yet.

Is that the only damage? I noticed the scrape is almost horizon. My CSI instinct says 45MPH dump.

My guess would have put it in the same area. From the pictures I could see scratches on the bar end and brake lever. Also, I THINK i could see rubbing/tearing on the far right end of the rear seat strap. Here' s the other picture:

Nothing on the fairings. That was my first thought too, but the owner said someone hit and ran while it was in a parking lot.

I believe him. It was a small bump or drop regardless. No dents on the muffler. Highly doubt that was a mid speed drop, or even a drop at standstill.

He did say he also dropped it on that side while stopped (getting off). I would expect more damage overall at mid speed, but I don't know how to explain the horizontal rashing. Or how it was dropped at all on that side and not damage the fairings at all. So I assume the fairings were replaced. If it could be explained I'd be more than happy.

Looking at both pics it is hard to say, Clearly see rash on bar end, and horizontal mark on pipe. And odd thing going on with rear seat strap.

My thoughts..., if there was fairing damage, why go through all the hassle and replace, fairing, most likely signal, mirror scratches, possibly rearset damage, but don't spend the extra couple bucks to get new bar end weight. It doesn't add up.

In short, kinda buying his story, looks like he dropped it at stop and got lucky that bar end took impact and must have saved everything else. Hard to see if rearset peg has any scuffs on it. Maybe scuffed pipe while picking it back up?

IDK, the whole hit and run thing sounds strange though. Besides Light cosmetic damage is the least of your worries when buying used bike. Hopefully he kept up on maintenance, oil ect...

The only other thing I can think of is the damage has been repaired except for the can. Or the can is off another bike.

Theres white paint on the exhaust, from another vehicle perhaps?

Hit and run sounds sorta legit if it is paint.

I would be suspicious. Since last I checked the kick stand is on the left side.

It looks like something rubbed up on the side of it. Doesn't look like it slid or anything. When I got hit on my gixxer I was going 45 MPH and even with frame sliders my yoshi pipe got 1/4 inch deep scrapes at the bottom. The only reason the pipe got damaged was because the asphalt ate threw 3/4 of my slider's puck lowering the bike's angle enough to come in contact with the pipe. By the time it ate threw enough of the puck the bike was probably only sliding at 20 MPH or so and even at that speed it caused some decent damage.
