Speedo Cable connector missing? Koso.

Howdy,

I am the very proud owner of a 2012 250R as of 2 weeks ago. First bike, having a blast riding! I've enjoyed this site leading up to the decision, and since. I can't find an answer to a issue that's come up: on a ride yesterday my speedometer and odometer stopped working. (Original owner installed a Koso dash.) I found that the speedo cable came out of the dash. Upon investigation it is missing a part needed to screw it back into the dash I think. Pointed to in red in this image, I think:



I've read about installing magnets etc. to make the Koso work. Confused as to if the original speedo cable similar to the one in the pic is still supposed to work. I've read about installing these dashes but I can't figure that one out.

Anyways, from the pic I don't seem to have that part, and the dash part feels externally threaded, so nothing exists to screw over that. If the part in the pic was on mine and I could screw it in, I would be good I think unless there is something different about the Koso setup. This pic came from ebay. Can someone please confirm that I just need this connector (or new cable) to re-affix the cable to the dash? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Welcome Will, I have no experience with the koso dashes but there are a number of ninjetters who run them. Hopefully they will chime in soon.

I thought that the mechanical speedo cable wasn't used with the Koso gauge, and you had to put a magnet on the front wheel with a sensor to pick up rotations?

i have a Koso on my 250, so i will try to help.

If the original owner got a plug and play kit, there is an adaptor that goes between the mechanical cable (pictured) and the koso. It has the correct threaded end to just screw the stock cable in and then a plug to attached it to the back of the Koso gauge.

The adaptor looks like this (the thing to the right of the red coiled wire):


If there is not a plug and play kit, then the Koso uses magnets on the wheel to detect speed and distance traveled. There is a Koso specific sensor that attaches really close to the magnets and then plugs into the back of the gauge. The stock cable is not used in that case.

Look near your front wheel and see if you have one of these:


It will be mounted similar to this:


If that sensor moves just a hair too far away from the magnets, it will no longer detect them and the speedo stops working. I can't recall what the proper distance is since I use the adapter, but I can get my manual out if needed to move it back into position.

I just took a couple pics of the cable at each end. Sorry, I should have done that originally. The cable is definitely connected to the left of the front wheel where it should be (I think). The magnets sound like they are part of every Koso install I read about, I cannot find the magnets anywhere... And why else would this cable magically come loose at the same time as the speedo stopping? Maybe it was already loose.




Dash appears to be model RX-2 not N.

Just a guess...

Can you look behind your front cowling and see if maybe the adapter is there with the part from the cable still screwed in? Maybe the cable somehow broke loose from that nut (thing?) and fell out with the other part remaining behind.

Feels like my speedo cable can go in that, but it is missing a threaded connector. Sounds like new cable required.

That's bizarro! Wonder what happened to the connector?!

Anyway, yeah that's what it looks like. The cable screws right into the adapter and everything will work as it should.
