Leaky petcock question
So, I finally got my bike going. Took it out for a ride today and it was fantastic. Until I got home. Noticed a large pool of gas under the bike, Fuel dripping out of the air box and when i turned it over it was flooded and literally shot fuel out the exhaust pipe. The carbs were just professionally rebuilt. SO I made a phone call and discovered it is in fact a leaky petcock causing it to overflow and flood the bike out. But, Ive just dumped well over a few hundred bucks in to this bike in a short amount of time, im flat broke. Would splicing in a manual fuel shut off keep it from flooding until I can afford a new petcock?

Yeah,i got in contact with him last night and he was the one who directed me to the petcock. I know they're not that expensive. Okay, $65 is manageable, my local parts place wants $100. So can I just put a manual one online for now until my new one gets here? I just don't wanna mess the bike up with it getting gas in thecrankcase every time I ride

You are lucky you cought it. This little device has damaged many engines. And I bet it burned down some garages also.

Petcock is full opened when engine is generating vacuum and still keeping the proper fuel level in the bowls is the job of the valves of the floats.

The petcock and the float valves both stop the flow of fuel. If gas is leaking into the engine, both of those parts are bad and need to be fixed. Your professional carb cleaning was incomplete/ineffective.

Did you install a fuel filter? If not you might have sucked up some crud from the tank, into those new carburetors, which might have stuck the float needles open. Did you ever pull tank and rinsed it out? Verified the petcock operation?
If the float valves are working properly, it wouldn't flood, also I'm going to guess you now have gas in then engine oil.

I agree with Motofool, InvisiBill, and Ghostt, and will add that the float valve assemblies (needle and seats) do wear, and should be replaced when you clean or "rebuild" a carb.
Crud in the tank will get under the needle and not let it seat completely, as Ghostt noted. |

Float levels standard procedure,
Tylers carbs before...wouldn't run After, all circuits confirmed clear...bike confirmed running upon install. Carbs *were* cleaned properly, float valves replaced, seats dressed. Levels adjusted, wet tested, held fine. ...I can not control peripheral circumstances. Phone message placed with Tyler, we'll be talkin'. |

Anybody care to wager on the fuel filter?
I run a fuel filter on mine, and below is the pictures of my carburetors after5k miles, and yes I use my reserve at least one every tank. These are just the way I found them went I opened them up, nothing else done. Fuel filter is critical for the PreGen as it doesn't have a proper one.

Yes, I went through and cleaned the tank and checked over the petcock. This bike has also been sitting for minimal two years so all the petcock seals are most likely bad. The bike is probably worth $600So I'm not too interested in sticking more money in to it. I'm just putting a manual shut off in line and calling it a day. Yes ghostt there probably is oil in the crank case. Gonna change the oil again. For the third time since I got the bike 3 weeks ago.

Fuel in the crankcase. Fuel. I would surely hope there's oil in the crankcase or I got bigger issues lol

Adding the manual shut off, won't fix the stuck float valves, you need to clean those again, and install a fuel filter, one from a motorcycle shop, they sell them for a couple of bucks.

Pulled the carbs. The float valves don't leak. At all.

All it takes is a grain of crud, and they won't seat properly.
Clean them and the seats, and verify all is clean, then if your not running a fuel filter, now is the time to get one, and install it. There's only one way fuel gets into the carburetors properly, and it's past the float valves. The other way is if the vacuum petcock is bad, as in the vacuum diaphragm has a hole/crack in it., the vacuum will pull fuel thru the vacuum line. Verify that the petcock is working properly, odds are is not, given the age of the bike. My petcock was bad, and it's a 98'
