E-Bike hauling ass at Laguna Seca

This is Shane Turpin on a Brammo Electric bike during practice at Laguna Seca. For those of you who don't know who he is Shane is a local fast guy out of Utah and was someone I went head to head with during my expeditions to Miller. He's ridden WSBK via a wild card ride at Miller.

Would so love to ride one of those. Just a throttle and a brake and a wicked sound.

Is that what happened to him? I was wondering why he didn't finish, figured the bike broke. That racing class is a total ****ing joke, they got people at @Jiggles level after his first track day(no offense) racing against professional racers like Rapp, Bostrom and Shane. Then on top of that the class only has a field of like 6-7 bikes so it's like 2 riders trying to see how many times they can lap the other 4 riders. I should see is one of the electric companies would spot me a bike for a race I'm sure I could do quite well.

I don't what's worse the HD circus show or the E-bike pitty party

Yep she thinks she is bad ass since she races a bike. The truth is your not bad ass in less you win.

Yep your right
When Shelina went down at the right hand apex of the Cork Screw there was no where to go. I hit her bike and launched into the tire wall, missing the airfence. I broke 3 ribs in the crash and injured my left leg. I was definitely disappointed. My stock ZERO S was at the top of the time sheets in practice and qualifying. I was looking forward to a podium. But that's racing

Fishdip, most women in motors ports are already under enough discriminating microscopes. Do you have an electric bike ride? What about a harley? Is she at the top? No. But given how many women are in our sport and the even fewer of them that do well, she can brag a bit.

My perspective is being out on track with her at Sonoma raceway. She does supermoto too.

Sorry but if your not placing in the top 4 of a races then your just like the rest of the ppl on the track. Being a girl dose not make you special wining races over and over is what makes you a bad ass.

Being a bad ass need not apply here. Having the ballz (male or female) to get out there is 90% of the battle. Where you place means nothing, getting out there having a good time is what it's all about.

Do you or have you ever raced Mr. Fish?

Bikes nope only tracked the 300 I am building up to race with. To me it dose not take balls to race or ride on a track fast (yep I am slower then her I bet). You must be one of the ppl who want to give every kid a ribbon just for playing the game. Racing is about wining losers say stuff like its about having fun.

Nope, don't believe in giving out "competitor" trophies. But sorry brah, the only losers are the one's who wished they were out there and were to afraid to try it.

Huh, I guess I must not be badass for competing in a duathlon and kicking the butts of guys who do triathlons every weekend and have the correct equipment for transitions. I only placed 12th out of 200 and 2nd in my age group out of 10...

I guess me having fun trash talking and chatting bicycles with some more experienced riders doesn't mean anything either.

EDIT: electric bikes rock!! That was a pretty cool video! I like how the announcer can actually be heard because they bikes are so quiet. I recently got a look at a Zero brand electric dual sport bike. It was pretty cool! I'd rock one for commuting for sure!

The talent differences are pretty clear, but it's a positive step that it's even gotten to the point where the riders matter. 5 years ago the bikes were so underdeveloped and slow that a particularly fast rider wouldn't make much of a difference. That Czysz guy (www.motoczysz.com) has been one of the better funded and higher-tech electric companies for awhile, yet he was winning races on his own bike as recently as last year, as a fast trackday rider at best.

Now that the teams do have people like Bostrom, Turpin, Rapp, Barnes, etc., it shows that the bikes are getting capable enough that the riders do matter. Hopefully the tech continues to improve, and the racing gets more competitive. What was Bostrom pulling in the race, 32's? I think he mentioned that they hoped to be in the 28's or 29's next year, which is competitive up there with the fastest daytona sportbike class.

Jason - I have no doubt you could land a ride with one of the electric teams, but my hunch is they are riding for free (or something awfully close to free). Might be fun anyway, but it's not paying Rapp's plane lease.

BTW - Shelina rocks. I was at a trackday with her awhile back, when some numbnuts completely missed his braking trying to divebomb a whole bunch of people (including her) into T14 at Thunderhill. He hit her hard enough to bend the tailsection on her bike, and he went down like a pile of bricks. She kept it on two-wheels and had the same bike out the next session.

hey, i was there watching that race! and that crash! and ted rich's crash!... AND when turpins bike ran out of battery and when bostrom said that turpin was just plain out riding him until his bike's extension cord came unplugged.

poor ted rich. i was rooting so hard for him. he jumped ahead 2 or 3 positions toward the start of the race (they said it was a jump start but it looked fine to me), but then had a few mistakes and fell back. started looking like he was really fighting the bike. then highsided coming into the front straight. it was spectacular, he ALLLLMOST saved it but he was on the front too much and it just tucked after the highside. redflagged and no spare bike to get onto. noooo! next time ted rich. next time.

Jason. Go introduce yourself to the nice gentlemen making electric bikes. We need some more youtube videos of you romping on people at the track. We'll just call the electric bike a new chapter in your rompage story.

**** if I could get a free ride I would take it in an instant. Most AMA racers pay for their rides or get a sponsor to pay for their ride, only the factory guys have money in their contract.

Back when I was AMA superbike rookie of the year and on the list of riders signed up for Moto GP I was still paying the bills. I had a $20k deal for World Stk and a $60k deal for my first year in Moto GP in the works but sadly the World Stk team was a joke and the Moto GP team came up 2 million short in money to make the big show

So I went back to beating up on club racers and stealing their contingency money so I could keep racing AMA. Then I got bored and quit before I ended up hating the sport entirely.

Understood, Jason. It's a pretty terrible market to try and get rich in, it sure does seem like it's limited to a handful of people worldwide who can get over that hump. But forget all the money, it's a sport that lets someone that looks like Marco Melandri attract Manuela. Seems almost fair that it should be that challenging to make it to the top.

Dude I would race for free at those levels just as long and my living expenses were covered. You'll never quite understand what its like to race at those levels unless you actually have but for me it was my life. I lived day to day in anticipation for those 8-25 laps I got racing at 100% risking my life doing something most would never attempt and even fewer are even capable of. You don't hear me talk about my feelings about the nature of racing much I think because it really makes me miss it.

You see a lot of pro athletes buying crazy expensive stuff with there money and although I didn't make at much as them I didn't even buy myself a nice bicycle until I had retired and had left over money. Everything I made in racing and my 40hr a week went strait into my race team to give me that edge to improve. I'm still trying to figure out how to apply the detication I once had for superbike racing to other things in life but so far no luck. My dedication to this next Mtb race is my latest attempt at re-sparking that drive I once had.
