Greetings from Southeast Virginia

Hey folks:

A bit of an apology here by way of a short preamble. I just noticed that someone posted a 250 for sale and the two comments thus far are relating to it being fishy and that the member's first post was to sell something. Understandably, not good form then I realised that I did something similar. My first post was a Ride Report with no introduction. Doh, my bad! In my defence, I am on a lot of different forums for different types of bikes and such, so I just plain forgot to do the introduction first. So, if I may beg mea maxima culpa (3 times), my introduction follows:

My name is Gregg and I live in Virginia (Virginia Beach) as my user name would suggest. My very short riding career dates back to a youngster when the family had a 50cc motorbike that my brother and I would ride until it just plain quit one day, and since it was an Italian motorcycle there weren't a lot of experienced motorcycle mechanics in Northern Maine at that time (nor since really). Fast forward many years later (I am 51) to 2006 when I finally gave in to the “spring motorcycle fever” and bought a new Honda VTX-1300. I had that bike for a few years and then sold it to a co-worker. Since 2008, I had owned a 1984 Honda Magna V-65 (which I totalled unfortunately... loved that bike), a 2006 Honda Goldwing (still own), at 2009 Kawasaki KLR-650 (still own), a 2011 Ninja 250 (still own) and a 2010 Yamaha FJR-1300 (still own).

My riding passion would be long distance adventures. I am a member of the Iron Butt Association and have completed two Saddlesores (1,000 miles in 24 hours), two as yet not certified Saddlesores (on on the Ninja, the other on the FJR), a CCC-100 Insanity (coast to coast to coast in under 100 hours) and a 48-10 (48 states in 10 days). The 48-10 will be visited again next year when I will do the ride with another rider and it will (hopefully) include Alaska and Mexico in the 10 days ,as well as, 10,000 miles in the same time period for the 10-10 certification. In more recent news, I just found out that I was accepted for the IBA 2013 Iron Butt Rally, which fills me with much happiness and outright dread. No doubt It will be interesting.

Thanks for listening and again, my apologies for not following the forum guidelines.

Gregg

Welcome to the forum!

Since your in the area you should also check out HRSportBikes.com

Its a local(Norfolk area) riding club, we're still growing and as of now I think there's around 80 people signed up for the forum, but we do rides just about every weekend(weather depending), and we're up to three meets/month, usually on Tuesdays, at different places around the area.

Welcome. I'm in Richmond.

So tell us, are the stereotypes about KLR riders being the cheapest bunch of folks alive true?

I am notoriously cheap so the KLR works for me quite well...

I didn't realize you were from VA Beach. I'm on the border of VA Beach and Chesapeake. Would be cool to have someone local to ride with.

Tom:

That would be cool indeed. We will have to work something out. On Saturdays I ride with the Honda Riders of Norfolk. Good group of guys. Most of them are older (retired or semi-retired), most are Navy vets and most ride Goldwings - but don't make the mistake of thinking that they are geezer-glides. These guys know how to ride and when the mix is right, the day can be a lot of fun. Their motto is that they take major (semi-major) roads only to get to a back road. I have learned a lot from these guys.

Gregg

Randy:

I have looked at the site but not registered. Your meeting location tonight is not that far from me, unfortunately I need to go in the opposite direction tonight to pick up a Christmas gift for the wife..... Besides, at 51, I might be a bit old for a sports bike rider meeting... I am a bit outside the average age demographic.

It was a pretty good meet. Im out of town till the 5th, but they are doing another one on the 20th at Bridges up near G&G cycles. And we've got a few older guys so far, so I don't think you'd be too out of place Its not really a dedicated Sport Bike group, that's just the name, its open to anyone that rides anything, as long as its 2 wheels lol.
