diygirl09 here

Hey guys

I'm a new rider. I got my license a few years back but didn't have the money at the time to get a bike. I now have a 09 green ninja 250. I live in Jacksonville and don't ride much but now that its summer I hope to get on the road more. Last year after I got my bike I road for a few months, and then made the mistake of letting it sit for about a month w/o any good fuel stabilizers or anything in it and now the carbs are all junked up. I found this website by searching the Internet on step by step instructions of how to remove and clean out the carbs. Right now my bike is in the garage and I am removing the "guts" of my baby in hopes to getting the carbs out cleaned and but back together. The few post on this site including the videos have helped aid me in the process of fixing my bike. I am still working on it, and I am probably going to change out the stock air box, because that thing is a waste of space. I have never worked on a bike before, so I'm hoping I don't mess anything up. However, I know if I have any questions I can always search the Internet for the answer or ask you guys. Well I just wanted to say thanks for including me in your group and I look forward to talking with you all. Safe riding. ~Michelle~ "DIYgirl09"

Summer sure starts early in Jacksonville (AL, FL, or what?). It's still officially winter. I have a buddy in college at Jacksonville, AL which I would visit when I still lived in GA and I used to go to Jacksonville, FL NAVY base to visit family in the '90s, so I'm a little familiar with those two.

IMO, bikes without the airbox just look even emptier... unless you have an idea for using that "wasted" space for something else.

Aloha and welcome, Michelle.

Watch out for a guy named "Oscar" in your neighborhood.

More DIY contributions would be greatly appreciated. Be advised removing the airbox will result in a bit less low end power in the bike as a trade off for freer flowing top end power.

Welcome! Tops to you for fixing your bike by yourself! I'd keep the airbox, but that's just me...

so many of you are saying to keep the airbox? I finally got my carbs out tonight and now im moving on to the next step (cleaning) to be honest like I said before I have never done anything like this and I'm not real sure how to clean then but was going to do some research and go from there unless anyone on here can tell me what needs to be done. I found a link today with a bunch of information about cleaning the carbs but didn't read it all yet. Also I am having a really hard time gettin the pos airbox out, I think I will have to remove the back tire to get it totaly out of there, and with some of you saying I should keep it I'm thinking twice about removing it. What do you all think?

The engine is more user friendly with the airbox than without. I'd keep it until you feel you're looking for more high end power from your 250.

have you read these threads?

thanks I see now what to do with the carbs this helps alot. As for the airbox... being a new rider maybe I should keep the big bulky thing in there, but I tell u what. I sure is a PITA to get to anything with it being there. Any ways again thanks and i will let you know if I have any more questoins and keep you posted on the progress.

Yes, you do have to remove the rear wheel to get the airbox out, and yes, it does make things difficult, but removing it makes it a bit more difficult to get all the carb settings right and keep them right over the passing of seasons...

I got mine out without removing the rear wheel. It was tight and it was still a royal pain in the ass, but it was removed with the rear wheel still in place. Almost everything else had to come off around it, but not the rear wheel.

oh cool, I couldn't figure out how to do that... That's good to know! I know the manual says to remove the wheel and everything behind the box, and that's how I've been doing mine... Hrm. I think next time I'll try it your way and see which way I like better.... It should be the last time I swap out airboxes anyway....

I'm not saying one way is better than the other cause as I said, it was still a RPITA. Just pointing out that it can be done.

I don't know about you, but this is something I'd like to have to do only once.

lol, yea, once would be plenty enough. Unfortunately in my case, not possible... But we'll take that to a different thread.
