the 3 2fiddies of intermediate group on the same corner.

I want to look like the guy on the red one one day. I wish I was able to get a session or 2 with them. this corner is my last challenge for this track, i got solid lines everywhere else but then this one comes up and im just all over

I'm worried that they may not have taken photos later in the day when I went back out, I don't remember seeing a photographer anywhere on the side of the track in the later sessions...that said I didn't look particularly hard for one

yea from my previous track days with them they tend to take a crap ton in the morning and afternoon to like 1 or 2 pm then they just kind of stop. maybe they run out of film or something idk but it would be better imo if they did it the other way around. Everyone gets better at the end of the day

Honestly, I never ever notice the track photographer. I'm so in the zone, i don't see what I'm not looking for. If it ain't moving around on the track, and it ain't my reference point off the track, I don't look at it.

I got a few pics, unfortunately it's all from the first session so far so I wasn't trying to go quick, hopefully they post more pics later and I really hope they stayed until the end of the day where I was getting the hang of it and leaning the bike over a good bit

they posted what I believe is the rest of the pics from novice. I hope there are more from later in the day but I think this may be it for me. Pic from the second session before I went out, Wasn't hanging off but I feel that my upper body was moved over alright in this corner. Unfortunately unless they got pics of when I went back in later in the day there won't be any pics of me hanging off low from this day next time...next time

July 6th at Hallett. Finally managed to get my knee down in one corner consistently but the photographer wasn't there after the first session. There was one session that I had great form and pace, but the photographer wasn't out. Such is life.

Alright so all the pics are up now, I think. Thank's to @Old Lemon I knew to go back and check and I'm glad that I did since there were a few pics from after I came back from my crash and rode covered in dirt

this pic illustrates just how low my handlebars are, I'm standing pretty much straight up and I have to lean forward a bit just to hold the bars.

and the best pic for last, in the big bend, pretty much topped out

feel free to lay down some criticism (good and bad) in a lot of these I wasn't trying to hang off because I was focusing on other things such as smoother throttle control/brake inputs (aka constant roll on of the throttle mid corner) but any idea of what I should look for to improve on the 27th would be very welcome since my throttle control is a lot smoother now and I'll likely be focusing more on body positioning next

cant tell from the pics, but dont forget to work on your lines. Lines are just as important as anything else. I focus just on a couple things each track day, last weekend was bp and lines. I went slower than my previous track day but it felt a lot better with my bp and my good lines.

Ben, you gots the death grip on your bars. Loose.

When you come to Ohio, you'll see Chris with the floppy hand and 3 fingers on the bar. No joke, pinkies off the bar, twisting the throttle like a screwdriver, resting lightly on the balls of his hands. I'm not as good, but it helps a ton with staying light on those bars and keeping the arms soft.

@Sirref what turn did you crash? Man, Shenny is not a nice place for a lot of people. There is absolutely no runoff in the highspeed sections. That being said, here are my tips for general track day beginners.
  • get off your bike and get your head down
  • be loose on the hands
  • dont look at your Speedometer. It will make you feel like your flying because your frame of reference is the ground and not whats in front of you
  • Look where you want to go and hold your line. Commit to it.
  • Dont worry about how fast you are going and ride your own ride

Here is a photo I have of me at Shenny. This was taken in early July of last year when I still rode beginner with NESBA. I think its the same corner as your avatar.

I can honestly say that Shenny was the track where I broke through that imaginary wall. I felt unshackled and was finally able to ride faster and faster. Its where I was able to put corners together and was able to see the "race line" without having been there before. It was awesome. Ill be back there for the 2nd time ever in August. Come out and play with TPM gents.

edit: heres me recently at Summit Main through T10 with MARRC

@burningscooter I went off in the little bend right after the corkscrew, bounced and rolled through a mud pit and ended up stopped at the tire wall

off and down, need to do
loose on bars, check
don't look at speedo? don't have one
look where I want to go, check
don't worry about how fast I want to go, learned that lesson the hard way

the pic was in the big bend in the straight, I don't remember there being a corner worker there though, it's possible there may have been one.

and @Old Lemon yea I spent the day working on being smooth w/the controls and my line choice, Next time will be a bit more being smooth, continuing with line choice but focusing on my bp

Believe it or not, I actually found it much easier to ride quickly on a bike that didn't have "economic" ergonomics like the 250.

I really began riding quick when I got my 999.

Maybe he thinks I am on the street? That pic was taken by my daughter at Thompson. I mostly rode conservatively without touching a knee down and leaving a lot of lean left in the tank, but I did play a little.

From my first race weekend on the little bike. There where some adjustments to made going from a 600RR to 250R, but I think i figured it out. I dropped almost 9 seconds from my first recorded time to my last, I need to drop another couple and I'll be at the sharp end of things.

very nice, you got down loooowwww

you mention adjustments to go from a 600 to a 250, do you mean adjusting to the front end steering being a bit twitchier (because the power doesn't lift it as much as a 600) the brakes aren't as good and the power isn't really there in comparison?

I've found with my 250 setup that I have to actively hold back when I flick it down because it's too effortless, this is not a problem that I've ever heard from a 600cc+ rider

I can tell you that brake markers and tighter lines are the biggest differences between the 600 and the 250 I noticed (obviously other than power), you just have to be tighter and carry every bit of speed in you can with the 250. Cause the speed you carry through the corner is the speed your going to come out with.

I find it pretty hard to get around the 600 and 1000s in the I group if I am trying to get it done post apex, and since there is no inside passing for our I groups that means if its not a pure out-braking pass then I have to line up the pass REALLY well and carry every bit of speed possible mid corner.

Racing ..... well ....... be prepared to anything as there are a lot of people who have disease when the flag drops lol

well the biggest adjustments were with the rider not the bike. I've raced my 600rr for about 6 years and was using a very point and shoot style while with the 250 have to rely soley on your corner speed. With such a lack of power you can't make it up on the gas it's all about maintaining a high entrance speed.
I didn't monkey too much with the suspension although I did go and drop the front 10mm to keep it from going wide when hard on the gas.

Hey, Ben... I was just looking at your pics again.

In all but the last one, your outside arm is almost locked. That's something I was trying to focus on during my track weekend... getting those arms bent and relaxed, outside forearm/elbow on the tank.

It's really useful to go to the photog site for your day and flip through all the photos. All the fast guys are way down... inside arm relaxed, outside elbow/forearm on the tank. All the novices (including me) are sitting up. Pics are usually posted chronologically so you can see the progression through the groups from awesome to gruesome.

My photos haven't been released yet but I'll share when I've got 'em.

I kept on catching myself unconsciously pushing on the bars, especially the inside arm. Got better as the weekend went on. Loose feels good but for me at least, it's not instinctive yet.

Do you feel stiff on the bike at speed? Like you're fighting it?
