It's this type of "stunt" that gives the good riders a bad name
Like CA traffic isn't bad enough???
Police not amused by motorcyclist’s freeway marriage proposal http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow...155022129.html Police in California say they're mulling over charges against a motorcyclist who orchestrated the shutdown of a freeway outside Los Angeles so he could propose to his girlfriend. The stunt, captured in a video posted to YouTube, occurred Sunday on the 10 Freeway in West Covina, Calif., 20 miles east of L.A. The video shows several hundred motorcyclists slow to a stop and then surround a biker who promptly released a plume of pink smoke, removed his helmet and dropped to one knee to propose to his girlfriend, who had been riding on the back of the bike. She appeared to be shocked by the proposal, but she accepted it. Some bikers pumped their fists and others did wheelies as they rode away ahead of the husband-and-wife to-be, with most exiting the freeway at the next off-ramp. Traffic, which had been backed up in both directions, soon began flowing again. "Hector 'Tank' Martinez proposed to Paige Hernandez in front of his family and friends," the description on the YouTube video reads. "Big ups to the 710 Bikerz and everyone else who took part in this event." The California Highway Patrol said on Wednesday it is investigating the incident and that felony charges for impeding traffic could be filed. "It's dangerous when you do something like that," CHP Sgt. Kurt Stormes told the San Bernardino Sun. "You've got free-flowing traffic. Suddenly traffic comes to a stop and people don't know what happened, and that's when accidents happen." ... |

saw this on the news and thought the exact same thing. Like I understand that you want to propose and make it epic but that is very dangerous and people could have gotten hurt. Plus being in a very liberal state like CA, I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming weeks and months, legislation might begin to be proposed to limit motorcycling, or something to that extent.

Marriage proposal on highway.
I was too lazy to go seeking this, but from the other titles it doesnt look like it was posted yet. Saw this on Yahoo news, cops are considering pressing charges. Honestly, if I was in a car behind them I'd probably be really pissed, especially if I was heading somewhere. Any who, it's still pretty cool to see all those bikes. Lol.

How could people get hurt, its not like they slammed on there brakes or anything they slowed then stopped, happens a ton here with regular cops running traffic breaks. its pretty lame but lets not over react. you should see how much crap they put on the bikes. At Del Amo motorsports last year they had a guy do a burn out with a set it covered every bike in the lot. People were so pissed they sent the entire staff out to wipe down all the bikes in the parking lot. |

im not buying this whole wreckless/people might/could get hurt argument. they didnt slap on the brakes or cut people off and stop immediately after, they gradually came to a stop at a certain point that was (obviously) planned ahead of time to be in front of that bridge where the guy is filming. If the bikers got hurt thats their problem, they all volunteered to do it and said yes. If anyone in the cars got hurt, chance would be extremely high that its their fault to begin with. |

It just sucks this kinda stuff gives people on motorcycles a bad name and people expect us to be stupid and wreckless and dangerous, and here most of us on ninjette are riding motorcycles that can barely pop a wheelie, let alone at any speed over 30 mph. Not to mention most members here that don't have 250s or the like as well as other forums I visit usually aren't super squidtastic either (couldn't fault someone for the occasional lifting of the tire on a 600+ though)

Freeway stoppages cause secondary accidents all the time, it's part of life, no point in trying to deny it. Imagine if someone hadn't been paying attention for a second and came up on the stopped cars and killed someone.

Is it kind of cool? Sure. Sweet? Yup. Dangerous, absolutely. Sure police might stop traffic, but that's kind of their job and part of their training. Also why they have bright flashing lights that are programed into our minds from when we're young to watch out for. We know when we see flashing lights, slow down, be alert. A bunch of bikers on a freeway aren't exactly going to be able to alert anyone.
Plus I'd be really pissed off if I was on the road and I ended up being late because some guy decided to hold up traffic on a major road to propose to his girlfriend.

It doesn't matter if you're "supposed to" be paying attention. People will distract themselves.

Accidents don't happen in a vacuum. What if the person who isn't paying attention is the guy driving the 80,000 lb. semi behind the car with your wife and kids in it? How would you feel about this stunt then?

How many cars were on that road that day at that time? Probably several thousand. So if only 500 cars got held up in that 3 minutes, think of how long it took until the last in line finally got moving again. Just like any accident or lane merge on a major highway. It might only be a difference of a few minutes for the first in line. But those stuck in the back, it could be closer to 10 minutes. And that increases greatly as the number stuck in a standstill goes up. Think of of any accident that happens. usually on the highway you can see for a good we'll say mile ahead of you. You see those people wayyy up in the distance start to move again, but how long does it take you to start moving? At least another few minutes. Plus once you hit standstill, you start blocking peoples exit. People do crazy things to avoid missing their exit. So now not only do we have to worry about the motorcyclists getting hit, but also the guy that suddenly realizes his exit is coming up and there is traffic a mile long behind him. So he tries to cut over in front of the trucker who is on the phone explaining to his next stop he's going to be a few minutes late because he's sitting in gridlock... See what I mean? Chain reactions.

*shrugs* Am I saying it's ok to block traffic for a stunt like this? No, not at all but each driver is responsible for their own actions.Traffic could just as easily be held up by some other natural cause and then what?

Anyone who has taken any MSF class or any decent driver's ed class knows that they talk about how any accident is a confluence of factors that lead to an accident, and breaking one link in the chain can often avert the accident. No, stopping the freeway is not going to be solely responsible for any accidents. Yes, it could be one of the factors in causing an accident. BTW, this sort of thing is why we have laws about deaths that occur during the course of a felony. If it were to be determined that this was a felony blocking of traffic, and a fatal accident had occurred, by legal standards every single one of those motorcyclists blocking traffic could be held for murder charges. |

baseless argument
I saw a bunch of self-centered a$$holes, I would not make the assumption, that suddenly they turn into nice and considerate people. We could only hope. Also that road block would slow down the EMTs no matter how quickly they tried to get out of the way. |
