What does it mean when....

So I was out for an evening ride and I was passing by a few guys on their cruisers. Well, as we passed each other a couple of them took their hands off their left handlebar and out off to the side pointing downwards. What does that mean?

I'm thinking it may mean put on your lowbeams but I was in my lowbeams.

Of course, being a noob, I just waived to em.

Sure hope so. I thought they were waiving, then i thought they were signaling slowing down, then i thought they were telling me my headlights were too bright (i do have HIDs), then I thought they were waiving again....

I was riding by some other sport bike riders when they patted their heads. Apparently that means there is a cop up the road. Can we get some kind of manual on these gestures, Alex?

No problem! Here's a new thread that covers the standard motorcycle hand signals.

Harley riders, if they wave to a sportbiker at all, will usuually give you that low point to the ground. I think it means "keep the rubber side down" or somesuch.

that would depend on which finger they are using to point.

I usually get so excited when a Harley rider lowers himself to wave at my sportbike that I forget to wave back!

I live in a biker town where everyone waves no matter what they ride (except BMW and Gold Wing riders). Harley guys and sport bike riders all go to the same places and each get along great. I find that if you wave to everyone (except BMW and Goldwingers) they will usually wave back and also help you out if the need be.

So I wanted to bring this thread back from the dead to ask about waiving rules. I usually try to wave no matter what, when ever, even when there's a median. But, I find when there is a median, almost all the bikers I waive to dont ever wave back. Today I had one person who did waive across a median, but he is the only exception.

I know they see me, im in all white, and my bike is rather loud. Is there a general consensus that medians act as invisible walls of which shall not be waived to? lol

If both bikes are in the fast lane, I wave and get waved to reasonably often across a median. I think it depends on how visible the other lane is. Depending how far apart they are, and how high the median is, it might affect how soon you can see an oncoming bike. YMMV.

Lol I wave that way sometimes, sometimes I put my hand in the air usually if they're stopped and I'm going through an intersection, if I'm turning I just keep it to a nod but I ALWAYS try and wave or gesture to ALL other motorcycles and I use 2 fingers just because thats my style :P I don't care if its a loud harley with 2" pipes and 48" ape hangers or an obvious squid with his l1terbike and wifebeater (the cold makes them go away though ) or just a regular motorcyclist. Trying to get that "We aren't a bunch of ignorant a**holes that ride fast and do wheelies" message out and of course the rider to rider friendliness and what not...

For some reason if I embed the video, when you want to play it theres an error. So a link will have to do.

Good post and link but I was told at my course that the pat on top of the helmet was police ahead. If it's a trucker, you can flash your lights.

Maybe the high beam thing is more useful with bikes with those blind-you style headlamps?

I like the 'signal still on' sign, I'll try to pass that one on because lots of riders could use that one. Wish mine would beep..
