You will learn many new things in two days.

You could advance some reading:

Just don't forget to practice the slow tight cornering. That's the hard part.

Where are you taking it? Wondering if you're local or not. I took mine at Pierce College in Winnetka, CA (San Fernando Valley). Great instructors there. Had a blast, even in the rain.

Wait you don't get your license for completing the MSF there? Well that sucks...

The MSF cert means you don't have to take the riding test at the DMV to get a license in CA. But you still need to take the written test.

You take the MSF Certificate to the dps office and then they charge you like 15 bucks, take a picture, and you get an M class endorsement added on your NEW license.

Hmm interesting. lol. I had to take my written DMV test before I could even take my MSF and then of course I took the written MSF test as well. Both extremely easy though.

In KY you still have to take the written test and keep your permit 6 months MSF or no MSF. Maybe that's it?

Yeppo, if you're under 21 in Cali I think MSF is required before you can get your M1. I think the have a permit for a length of time only applies to those under 18 here.

Either way, congrats OP! What bikes were on the range at your location and which one did you choose

I'm not knocking those who take the MSF with zero riding skills because let's be honest where else can you hop on a bike and learn with no experience. But at the same time I also see the MSF as a $250 bribe to the state so you can get a license with nearly zero chance at failing. I know I'm going to ruffle some feathers hear but I've heard some amazing stories of riders clearly unsafe to handle a motorcycle being passed. I've also seen my share of riders on the street that make me think that that person doesn't belong on a bike. Motorcycles just carry to high a penalty to those who can't handle them. So when the system allows someone to essentially pay $250 to ride in 15mph circles and cram for a written test, then is given full access to 200hp machines it needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Note: I don't think passing the DMV cone test proves your any better of a rider because simply put the cone test is a bigger joke then the MSF passing ever student indiscriminately.

Im glad you have joined us here and have chosen a sensible bike to start on I wish you safe and fun learning experience. If you have a chance to hop on a dirt bike with some friends don't pass it up you'll learn a lot.

O in my defense I kinda forgot other states make you pay haha Ours is free here. So really. Why not? lol

And yes they definitely just pass people. There was a lady in mine that was scared to lean the bike, so she pretty much did the entire course at like 8 MPH. She passed.

Oh @CycleCam303 is going to hate that part about being free. Every time someone says the letters MSF he starts crying about how he wasted $250 that could have gone to better gear on a class I told him he didn't need to take. Oh well live and learn I guess

In Texas you do need to take the written test too, but its easy as sh1t. My down syndrome brother could pass it lol. 200$ for an MSF course is a pain but hey, its worth it if you dont have anyone to teach you the basic tricks and skills.

That is correct, MSF course is required for under 21 years old. I think they changed the permit rules recently though. My friend is 18, got her permit, but still has to wait 6 months to get the license. She already took the MSF course too. I sure as hell didn't need to wait when I got mine a few years ago.

She probably passed all the handling sections, but failed all the timed portions.

Guy in my class failed because he cornered too wide.

Here in FL we are required to take the MSF regardless of experience level. And pay the $250. The only way out is to come from another state and already have the endorsement. However, the bright side is that there is no testing at the DMV. Just being your $150, birth certificate, electric bill, magazine subscription, and a parent (if you are under 18) and then they take your photo and hand you a license. Don't forget to ask for a renewal or else they wont renew it.

In my case, I was a pity pass. I didn't do well at all on the riding test, but I got a 100% on the written. But at the same time, I would bet that I have more riding experience now (2 yrs later) than most of the others there (excluding the pre-experienced riders). Most of them looked like weekend rider types. I'm looking at nearly 20K miles in two years and none of it is riding like grandma.

And definitely buy a ninjette for your first bike. The pregen fits my personality better than the newgen, but the 300 is probably also good.

IMHO a good MSF instructor will teach you as much as possible in the time provided and only judge that you can abide by the laws of the road. How fast you go or proficiency with the controls is irrelevant.

Sadly the tolerance of "road etiquette" and the law don't match. So most will judge that some can't ride or drive their way out of a wet paper bag.

I don't think there is such thing as a "pitty pass", it's just that the bar is set that low.

imo, as a person who never rode a motorcycle before the BRC, i thought it was a pretty good course.

in my case it was $135
which is not too bad for a two day class, and 10 hours of practical skills training.

Gary, this site uses a sneaky function, [ you ] (without spaces). It will replace that tag with the person's username who is logged in and reading the thread. You will see it in other threads and even in thread titles.

When I look at his sig, it says; csmith12, 250r or 300 for a first bike?

Honestly I don't think she did that either! I KNOW I saw her fail the box.

In her and everyone else in my class that failed's offense though, they all had those horrible Kawi eliminators. I showed up 30 minutes early just to claim the only TU250 they had I can't do forward controls and low peg scrapping bikes.

wow this turned into a slightly larger canversation than I anticipated. But I spent 150 since I am under 21. so all in all i think it was money well spent. i learned a lot especially looking in a turn and quick stopping. Crazy how you WILL go where your eyes are.

O and someone asked whatke used. There wasn't a large selection and I was assigned to a tiny Suziki GN125 i believe. haha was like riding a poclet bike.

O and someone else asked where I took it. I took it at Cerritos College here in Cerritos off of the 5 frwy.

I think the Eliminators are all 125cc aren't they? When I took it, it was an issue because I dropped the bike after it stalled in a tight curve. A 250cc probably wouldn't have stalled like that.

Yup, the MSF Eliminators are 125's. I wish we had 250's in the class but eh, 125s worked out okay I think.

I took my MSF on a Shadowhawk 250. Enjoyed her and dropped her once. Mind you The second day was done in rain and I did happen to grab the brake lever a tad to much while coming to a stop.

I took the cone test because I there were no MSF courses open when the price of gas skyrocketed to $3.50.

Congrats @StephenA
