Another duckling stopping mom

Prison vs small fine. The ethics of outcome based penalties for the same crime raise an interesting moral question.

people need to look at the risk they may be putting others in. I'm sure she meant well, but there could have been major complications to her actions.

The facepalms just keep coming today.

Like I said before about the last incident, I understand the sentiment, however I fail to see the logic. Would I feel bad for not stopping, yes but I'd rather feel bad and guilty than being the cause of a pile up on a highway. As simple as that, any other arguments on this matter are then[in my opinion] anyone's personal views and their own brand of logic.

I hope the judge increases the fine when she goes to court.

"Bibeau, a new mom herself, says she plans to contest the ticket."

So she endagered her life and could have left her child motherless. I'm curious to know her reaction if she read that story on the news about someone else:

"In other news a local woman stopped on the side of the road to help some ducklings cross. Sources say she is survived by her husband and 6 month old baby."

Truly, what would she say to that? Was she even thinking?

Both incidents highlight how drivers don't leave enough stopping distance, or look far enough ahead on the road.

Would these pileup crashes have happened if the car suddenly stopped due to mechanical failure? I guess so.

The circumstances matter a bit, at least IMO. She stopped her car in the median (not a travel lane), and evidently did so in a way that didn't endanger other traffic enough to cause an accident. That same median is used for disabled cars (as stated by that highway patrol). I don't have a problem with her receiving a ticket for it, as it probably is in the best interest to discourage that type of stopping.

But it is different to me than stopping the car dead in the fast lane, and then getting out to help a duck.

Sorry but i would have done the same thing. She wasn't stopping traffic. just helping the little critters.

I stopped and rescued 3 kittens from the side of 95 once.

If it had been kittens or puppies would everyone be reacting the same way? For that matter, would they still have fined the women?

Yes. Snatching up animals isn't an emergency. Being on the side of the road out of your car creates dangerous situations. People always rubberneck and slow down, backing up traffic and causing accidents.

Example: Back when I owned my Supra I'm driving down the highway and the car shuts off. I coast over to the side to try and figure out WTF(was fuel injector fuse that blew). I'm in the passenger seat checking out fuses under the glove box when a guy in the right lane in a truck slows down cause he's looking at me. The girl in a Kia SUV is looking at me too so she didn't see him slow way down. She looks up and it's too late, slams into the back right corner of his bumper and her car goes flying and flips onto it's side and slides into the side median in front of me. Just like hitting a ramp with 2 wheels on the side.

I get out and run to her. Her SUV is on the passenger side with all the windows busted out, she's still seatbelted in the driver seat as I'm looking down through her window at her, her head is pouring out blood. I get her unbelted and pull her out of the car onto the road, try and stop the bleeding until the paramedics can get there.

I can't speak for anyone else's opinion, but if someone is foolish enough to stop in traffic to help an animal in such a way that it presents a threat, then I think you deserve punishment and ridicule.

In this particular situation, it sounds like the cops thought such a threat was present. I wasn't a witness obviously, so I can't say whether or not that was true, and will just have to assume the cops are correct.
