There is a cop normally in the group rides I take. We split our group into 3 skill levels and leave 10-15 mins apart as well. He normally rides with the "fastest" of the 3 groups. Needless to say, he breaks the speed limits along with all the other riders in that group. His presence really doesn't change things much while riding. Some of the riders in the group keep their distance from him, others don't care either way. After the ride, he goes home rests up for his shift and then it's business as usual, if he sees you speeding expect a ticket.
Aside of being a pretty cool guy, his training and skills really help when it's needed to handle unforeseen issues.

I just have a bad opinion of them. Dad was one and I know what they do and how they act. Maybe not all of them, but most definitely some of them.
1- don't get married and have children if you want to screw around. Cops tend to "try" and get laid at every opportunity (read this to mean different from any other male who has a "normal" job") that the job provides. I'd think you would have some sense of moral obligation to the public other than sexing every women you meet. 2- Cops that I know have the "Im better than you attitude even tho I make 40k less than you I want to ruin your life as much as I can". Pulling you over for the dumbest crap.. like a burnt license plate light.....really? 3- My dad had a collection of weapons he stole off people. He told me when I was a kid.. laughing as he said it.." yea those are from the drunks I hauled in". 4- Anyone who supports the act of crippling my freedom (im not a mass murderer or drug dealer, just a normal everyday Joe who don't need the hassle of being pulled over for 3 miles over the speed limit). I cry not a single tear when I hear of crimes against officers. (I actually cheer for them although I don't condone murder against anyone other than someone breaking into your home.) I just think that society does not need more law enforcement. Im just a normal every day guy who speeds at times, I like my alcohol( I do not drive or ride during this) and I enjoy my personal freedoms provided to me by my constitution (my guns are a big one). Im of the opinion that less govt and less leos would make the country a more moral and responsible place to live. **Please understand this is just my opinion and I dont judge anyone for disagreeing with me. |

Having been on both sides, I will say that there is both truth and serious over-generalization within this thread. I won't bore you with my opinion on which is which!

The cops I've met at traffic stops are assholes.
The ones I've met at gun stores are very friendly and helpful people. |

Just remember that there are cops that know how to separate work and play. I have family that are LEO's and I'll be one too, eventually. They have their work during work and go home and relax and prefer not to be thinking about work during family time. My father-in-law spent 40 years as a Chicago cop and never brought work home, work stayed at work and once he was off, it was drive home and smoke a cigar time, to unwind.

In my opinion, if you're riding around with your license plate light burnt out at night, you deserve to get pulled over and given a simple fix it ticket. It's an easy fix to begin with and if you're actually caught with it, it either means you're trying to get away with it or you didn't know, in which case the LEO just informed you of it. No harm done. No, you might not be a murderer or anyone dangerous at all but that doesn't mean the speed limit doesn't apply to you. Bottom line I think is that, like Sal said, LEO's are people too. There are good people and there are bad people. No career can escape that.

I used to be married to a cop - and then he committed a crime against me...was found guilty, sentenced to 2 yrs probation and 200 hours community service...but was also given PBJ so they gave him his badge and gun back...
They really protected him and basically made my life hell...I won't even go into the details of what he did to me AFTER that, that IMO, was way WORSE than the crime he did...so I moved away to get away from all of them... However, that didn't stop me from becoming a police dispatcher/911 operator. I know not all cops are 'bad' and to be generalized so negatively. I cared about my officers' safety when I worked behind that radio. I was just as responsible for their lives as they were their own. So yeah, what my ex and his 'brothers' did I could certainly generalize and say "all of them are bad" but that's not fair to the ones that aren't. And, yes, the 'good' ones I know, they do ride sport bikes and one of them even likes to go to the track.

This is tangentially related to police....
Having recently started riding I found out that in New York State police can pull you over for no other reason than riding a motorcycle. I was stopped recently for a "motorcycle safety inspection check" and given a $90 dollar ticket for lack of a license plate light. The cop couldn't have seen that the light was out when I was pulled over, he was parked in front of me, ran out into the road, and waved me over. If you are behind me and you see my light is out, I get it, I'm in violation of the law and I can be pulled over and ticketed. Being pulled over for no reason other than riding a motorcycle smacks of being asked for "my papers". I don't agree with the principle that I can be pulled over simply because I'm on a motorcycle and not driving a car. |

My brother is a Baltimore City cop, and he loves it. However, you can't simply generalize. Generalizations make you look like a ****ing idiot.
"COPS ARE ****ING IDIOTS" = Yes. Some of them. They're people. "MOTORCYCLISTS ARE ****ING IDIOTS" Yes. Some of them. They're squids. Asshole cops = Squids of Motorcycling.
