Throttle kills the bike
Hi guys, so out of boredom and winter blues, I took the carbs out and put it back in, I'm an HVAC Mechanic so I felt comfortable removing it and putting it back in. I didn't do anything to the carbs beside taking them out and putting them back in. Now when I start my bike, it idles beautiful, I usually keep it around 1700rpm. As soon as I move the throttle the bike dies on me. Not sure where I ****ed up. The only thing I was unsure of was the cables coming back from the throttle, I'm not sure how tight the two nuts are supposed to be that attach to the carb. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You mean you removed the carbs and reinstalled them without doing anything else to them? Maybe in jostling them around your freed up some debris that got stuck in the main jet(s). That would kill the midrange and wide-open throttle running.

Yup, carbs need thorough deep cleaning and refurb.

before you rip the thing apart, try fresh fuel, get ALL the old out of the tank, drain the bowls, retry with 100% absolutely fresh fuel.
The throttle cables must have adequate freeplay to allow full closure of the throttle plates. Fine tune the freeplays to enable acceptable "snapback". Obviously, avoid, adjust and correct any hanging up of the throttle.

Yeah, set the cable adjustment for about 1mm of movement before it pulls on cable. Ensure that throttle fully closed.

So I should adjust it so I have 1mm-2mm play on my throttle grip? Are there any other tips for adjusting it that I should be aware of? Thanks |

Nah...other than setting freeplay at the throttle, 1-2mm insufficient there. Danno, I believe, was referring to the cables at the carbs.
I believe there is a spec in the service manual for actual freeplay measured at the throttle grip...3-5mm? Anybody? Don't let the grip rub against the switch housing....a very common assembly error in "my throttle is sticking" issues. If need be, pull it back to bar end slightly.

Thank you guys for all the help, playing around and adjusting the throttle cable at the carbs brought it back to its former glory. Appreciate all the help. Ride safe.

I'm glad you got that sorted! But can anyone explain how/why cable adjustment at the carbs causes it to die when throttle is applied?
