Can't Find a Bike

I've been on Craigslist for a Ninja 250 and I can not seem to find one for a decent price. I am looking to spend at most 1500 to 1800. Of course the less the better I will be.

This will be my first bike, just needs to look decent and run well.

My friend had an 07 with 4600 miles and it was dropped, lots of scratches by muffler, some big dent/scratch below left handle bar, and a crack on the left fairing, but not that much. It also had dents in the gas tank.

Took a while to start but when it did it also took a while to warm up and idle correctly. They rode it around and he said mechanically it was fine. Forks were a little crooked but he straightened them. His friend wanted 1500 but my friend said he would probably take 1300. It was the first one I looked at and did not just want to say I will take it yet. Have not been able to get in touch since then.

Meanwhile I can not find crap in CL around my area. I am in Philly so I looked in all three states around me and people are trying to sell 2007 models and below for around 3k or a little less!

One guy has a R-title and he even increased his price since last time I have seen it.

If worst comes to worst and I will be eating crap for next 2 weeks until I am paid I could try and get a 08 or 09/10 model if I could get one for 2100 or so but I don't think that will happen.

My MSF class is in June so I would like to get one before all prices are jacked up even more.

What did you guys pay for your first bike?

Prices are already getting jacked up cause of the season turning, but $3k for '07 model?? That's ridiculous. When I was looking to buy a couple weeks ago, I was seeing new gens for that price. How long have you been looking? I scoured cl for weeks. Can't just give it a day or two and say there's nothing. Hang in there. Also, a few hundred more bucks will help.

I paid $5100, new

Also, your going to want to spend at least $500 on gear

I have been looking since the end of march, finally decided I would buy one beginning of April. Reason why I prefer an older one is because I know I will drop it.

Depending if its the middle of the month when I get payed, I may have couple hundred more but I have so many school loans and bills each week to pay that if I do spend more then those bills will go late and they are unavoidable. Hell living in this area is pretty expensive.

I've even emailed lots of people a few selling 08 or 09 models for around 27-2900 bucks but one of them the gas gauge wont work. If I could get them to 2100 then I would be just barely making it to the next check. And the rest of these people I guess never check their emails because they don't include phone numbers either.

The 07 model my friend showed me looked pretty old I mean it had been sitting for 2 months had dust all over so that didn't help and even though he had been riding for 5 years and told me it was solid pretty much I still felt weird about making an offer the first day like that.

I say it's ridiculous for an entirely different reason: $3K was MSRP for the '07 model. That implies NO devaluation for use, mileage, age, or condition. Ludicrous, but I've seen dealers asking for it and arguing that it's justified.

You should keep in mind what Sean said too. You need money for good gear. ATGATT

Yeh I know I will need gear but I have some gear my friend never used that he will let me use until I buy my own. Basically I need to go to a store, get my measurements and I will buy something each week on the net. I have steal work boots I bought for the MSF course but I will want actual bike boots and a jacket for sure, gloves too and some pants if they go over jeans.

I'll be scared to death because Philly drivers are complete Aholes.

You could be right jiggles. Saving up will take a while because of all my bills each month. I rarely buy myself things or unecessary items. I bet prices will still increase into mid summer.

If my friend would get back to me I would get that 07 model but I don't think he wanted to sell me it considering I didn't take it the first day because I was unsure.

Thanks I'll look at that too. Most of them on there tend to be dealers asking crazy prices haha. One guy selling a 06 said it was worth 2800 because of aftermarket exhaust...ok I could care less about your exhaust or mods I would not put one on anyway.

Blue book value can be on and off at times. I've looked at reading and lancaster areas but they have increased their prices too. 2004-2005 models for $2100-2400 now. I use search tempest to see what pops up.

There is one 2 hours away, $1600 bucks but has a cracked fender in the front, bunch of scratches its a 2006. Can these things last on the highway for 2 hours or more? I would need my friend to follow me back too.

Ah, the joys of inelastic demand.
You will get gouged on price and you will have no money for gear...

If I were you, I would save up until you could afford the whole deal. If you have so many bills that it is hard to save, you should not be getting into motorcycling as it does not save money.

2 hours on the highway is perfectly fine for these bikes.

Keep in mind that there are basically no differences between the different first-gen years. So if you find one that is even a bit older, as long as it runs fine, there is no big reason to pass it up in favor of a newer bike.

Good luck finding something! Like others have said, it's the start of riding season, so prices are gonna be higher than the fall. If you need a hand picking one up or something, let me know. I'm just south of Philly in Media.

The one is WV is 3 hours haha but I may go all the way up there. I will contact him to see some pics.

There is a guy selling a 2010 for $2900. It needs a right fairing and only 2,500 miles. Lowest he will take is 2900 and his ad says make an offer. I was going to offer 2k but now I won't.

Sucks I have all these student loans but I know I would be alright if I got one for at the most $1800.

Another guy is selling a 2005 it has like 300 miles on it, may need carbs cleaned he is selling it for $2k and lowest he will go is $1800. It is real close to me.

I used to live in Media last year, worked there for the school district doing software development. Nice little area and my insurance was cheap haha. I'm surprised no one is selling any by there.

Haha, I just sold mine a couple weeks ago. A student at Widener bought it.

I'd definitely look into the '05. If you're not scared of turning a wrench, cleaning the carbs is probably not that big of a deal. If it's a carb'd bike that has sat for a bit without running, usually that is all that needs to be done to get it back up and running well.

go to the 05 and bring 18 but start with 1500 show you have the cash and are seriouse and then tell him that if the carbs need to be cleaned its a 200-400 job depending on where you take it

I dropped $2900 on my 2008.

Here are a couple for you, if you want to travel for them:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...982541307.html ($2200)
http://fredericksburg.craigslist.org...947347654.html ($1800)
http://easternshore.craigslist.org/mcy/2940111298.html (2008 for $1800, if you want to repair it. Drop him down to $1000 and you might have something here)
http://fredericksburg.craigslist.org...929188889.html ($2000)
http://richmond.craigslist.org/mcy/2929494451.html ($1200 but no fairings)
http://fredericksburg.craigslist.org...923868531.html ($2200)

Hope that helps. They're in order from most recent to older, with the oldest being March 26th.

Yeh depends on the area, seems like some places they can still go for cheap. Usually people are surprised of the prices they hear for bikes selling around my area. I guess I have to wait until next friday to go down with some cash and try to pick something up. Hopefully the yellow one will be there still.

Looking for a bike, trailer or something else? Let Google help without you even being in front of the keyboard. Here's how:

Go to http://www.google.com/alerts and you should see something like this;

Enter something like site:cincinnati.craigslist.org ninja 250 (change cincinnati to your city listing in craigslist) into the search query and set the rest of the preferences as you see fit and click create alert.

You can create as many alerts as you want too.

Depending on your alert settings, you can get an email

Clicking on the link in the email reveals and notice all results are trimmed down to craigslist in cincy.

Now tell Google to go find your stuff and hope if helps you find a bike faster.

There is a yellow 2005 with about 300 miles in pottstown. He was telling me carbs may need some cleaning but it looked good in the picture. I asked the lowest he would sell and he said 1800. Too bad at work I can't access google alerts I would do that.

I wouldn't say that man...I paid 2300 for my 2006 as it only had 2400 miles on it and was in mint condition. I already had someone offer me $2700 for it when I am ready to sell it.

These are hot ticket items...thats why the price is not much lower that msrp when they came out.

Yup I already set it up on my phone. Seems pretty cool but not too many in my area come up everyday. I wish I didn't have to wait until next friday but oh well, got to I guess. I may even find a better one by then.

The annoying thing is getting these people to reply to you if they don't include phone numbers. I've emailed several people using that CL address and 1 out 5 reply.

I bought mine completely stock, with all the maintenance and records to prove it for $1600 with 6300 miles on it. I would not have payed over 2k for it. Even an '06 is now 6 years old. They sold for $2,999 msrp brand new. Sorry, but they should all be at or below 2k now or you're getting taken to the cleaners.

Yeh I agree that is what a used one was when it was new. I don't see why now they are all so valueable. And these all have mileage on them with some scratches too. I would be comfy paying 1600 with some scratches. I mostly will drop it too so that is why I don't want to pay so much.

Have no idea if my friend's 07 is even still available. Wish I had taken pics to put on here.

Mint condition is different though, none of the ones I look at are close to mint. And the guy who puts mint in the title automatically thinks its worth 1k more!

Yeh I probably won't want a bigger bike unless I get a huge raise or something. Come to think, I may be eligable at my company for some kind of dividend in June..I heard. But I am not sure, don't want to get my hopes up.

Of course when its time to sell, I would probably go off of what I paid, what damage have I done, and price it according to that.

These other crazies around here want full value like every new person getting on a bike is brain dead.
