New from KC

I just got my first bike, an '07. It has been dropped once, but looks to be in great shape otherwise. I'm taking the the MSF course in a few weeks and it will have to sit until then. I'm a bit nervous, but excited to get started.

My wife is really nervous about me riding. Any advice?

Why would the wife of one of the the biggest names in Import/Export and CEO of one of the biggest Latex suppliers worry about him riding? You are Art Vandelay one of the most powerful men in the world, and most certainly the luckiest. I am belittled at your presence and welcome you to this humble forum. BTW, my friend George is about to land a job at Vandelay Industries, hope he gets it and you guys hit it off.

Welcome and advice-wise....get the best gear you can buy and keep the lovely wife in the loop - share your excitement! Nothing more disheartening that a bike-widow.

Good on you for taking the course - an empty vessel holds more

Welcome aboard Shawn. I see you have already jumped right in on the front and back brake discussion. FWIW, I feel you are correct.

Welcome, Art. Don't let the tone of that brake discussion get you down. Its not all that common, and we've got some great people here.

Safety on the bike really is within your control for the most part. Check out the 50 Ways to Save Your Life article, and the keys studies on motorcycle safety, like the NHTSA study, the Hurt Report, and the MAIDS study. You'll be shocked at how many motorcycle accidents are the result of lack of simple rider care. Driving while intoxicated, single vehicle motorcycle accidents caused by excessive corner speed, etc. You'll also be surprised at what a strong impact wearing reflective and light colored gear can have on improving your safety.

My wife felt a lot better about me riding when I explained that I very carefully remove many of the risk factors to riding, and am still able to have a great time winding the 250 up on the back roads. Again, welcome, I hope to continue to see you around the forums.
