A completely different painted pipe!!
That's right, this painted pipe is on a green bike!
A couple of weeks ago my wife, ManyCavies, noticed the thread started by bigrodg8 with his comment about painting his bike's "big shiny can". We read the suggestions about paint and went to Home Depot and found this: Yep, it's the Rust-oleum made for BBQ grills. We chose that because it's flat black and rated to 1,200° F. I'm not sure how hot mufflers can get, but I figured that a higher tolerance is better. So, the first preparation I did after removing the muffler was to tape off the chrome that we wanted to keep. (I taped it with green painters tape. ) Next, I sanded the exposed surfaces with (extra?) fine grit sand paper. Then, I painted about four layers, waiting a few minutes between layers, and left it overnight to dry. This is what it looked like after I put it all back together: I didn't have an opinion going into this project and I've found that I really like the way that it turned out. The black can with chrome accent complements the rest of the bike. It looks a lot better.

Really like it! much nicer than that all chrome. Kawi made the right call with the 2010 model and its good to see that its easy to copy that change at a low cost.

Looks good - I bought the same paint, but have not gotten around to doing it.
I sure would like to know how the paint holds - in terms of color over time, how easily the paint scuffs, and how it holds up to washing - before I make the plunge and do it myself versus paying for powder coating. Be sure to post some photos after a few weeks of riding. |

Actually, now that I think of it, that picture is after a week of light riding.
I'll post more pics in a few weeks. (That gives us a "real" purpose for going on a ride! )

Hi Tod! Which size of sand paper did you use to sand the exposed surfaces?.I saw another thread from Rodge and he used 2000 grit sand paper.I still have alot of sand paper but 1500 grit so just want to know if OK to use 1500 grit so I don't have to buy sand paper.

1500 is fine. just make sure your muffler is clean then sand it lighlty, just enough where you see the scuff marks. the wipe it down again let it dry and paint.

np. i sanded dry. but i wiped it off with a wet towel to make sure the sanded surface was clean. then i wiped it off and let it dry for a second before i painted.
Yes i painted the top part of the cover. I just taped off the rest of the cover. |
