new rider lesson 842: Careful when passing high schools

Good morning/afternoon/evening wherever you are

Just a quick note on something that happened on my commute to work this morning that I thought I might share as a heads up to other newer riders.

I am waiting at a light this morning; big intersection, 3 lanes going straight each way, two left turners each. About 100 yards after the intersection going in my path of travel, there is a left turner to go into a high school parking lot. Bunch of cars all around, I'm in the left lane. My light turns green and the guy next to me just hammers his pick up to get ahead, cut me off and go to school. Luckily I realized that is was likely a pimple-face teenager (no offense to our younger members ) as soon as he started stomping on the gas like nuts and I slowed down immediately, so no close call. But a reminder that around a HS one can easily encounter some yungins trying to prove something to somebody and to be extra cautious.

Ride safe!

No kidding!!!!! I avoid the school areas all together at those peek times where students arrive and leave. Buses can't see sh*t and it's chaos in my little town and the high school is on a road where the speed limit is 55. Inexperience + speed + bikes = bad news.

Yeah, the buses really are bad! I've had them merge into my lane on top of me multiple times. There's not much you can do, but at least they're so big that you can see it coming early, and have enough time to get out of the way.

They also have a huge blind spot ^ So that probably contributes to the problem. Best to avoid being around them at all.

I have much respect to school bus drivers. They are the ultimate distracted drivers and we trust them with our kids. I truly give them mass room, you just never know when the driver is watching kids or the road/mirrors.

Young drivers in camaros/mustangs/ricers or hot rod farm trucks scare the crap outta me.

Damm kids will toss things out the window of the bus at you when you pass on a bike.

^True, lol.

Actually, when I was in high school, I had a tired, 12 mpg run-down Isuzu Trooper.
Style baby.

Miss it much? I grew up in Switzerland, lived in NYC for a decade before moving out here. I think I would have a hard time leaving.....

This past weekend there was a pretty big high school dance..needless to say it was scary driving around town. Apparently kids making left turns don't need to yield to people trying to go straight?!
Speeding and tailgating and swerving and being ridiculous...

Be weary of teen pedestrians who have show no regard for walking red lights!
And kids randomly dancing in front of oncoming traffic.
