06 Ninja 250 considering 15t sprocket. Thoughts?
I have an 06 250 that runs strong now that I made my 650 mi. Trip, many miles at 80mph+ cleaned the carbs nicely. I ride the interstate- short trips occasionally- it's a light 300lb bike, 80mph = 10,000 rpm. It seems many people are getting better highway rpms by changing front sprocket gear from 14 to 15 tooth. I'm 150 lbs, so I dont think I'll be boging the bike down on takeoffs if I make the change. First will take longer to wind out and give more speed before shifting.
Looks like I would have to remove the gear shift linkage from the cover plate during the diassembly. Does that sound right? Any thoughts or tips are appreciated. I'd like an 09 ZX6R? BUT that won't happen on my budget so I'll have to live with the 250 for a WHILE. |

Hi Karl,
Your assumptions are pretty spot on. Linkage, cover plate and the likes to replace the sprocket and should calm things down just a small bit on the highway. Good luck!

I read part of that thread for my research. I know I can't turn my 250 into a 600, just trying to do an inexpensive mod to improve high speed performance some. Looks like I'll be able to lower the rpms at 80mpH by at least 700? If I can wind 4th and 5th out more for passing at 60mph that would be great also.

I got my '05 250 last summer. This spring I put on a new chain that came with the bike when I bought it. I assumed I had the stock 14 on the front, and was going to put the new 14 on it that came in the kit, but when I took off the old one, I realized it's a 15.
All this time I marveled at how low 1st gear was, letting me idle in gear at walking speed, and that was with the 15. I can't imagine any advantage of a 14, other than being slightly quicker off the line. I'm considering going down a few on the rear if that sprocket ever needs replacement. In any case, one tooth on the front isn't a major change. |

Thanks triple jim. Do you think the 15t sprocket was stock, or dI'd someone change it and just bought an extra chain?

I switched my 08 to a 15 tooth and it was darn near perfect.

I'm running a 15 on the front and my highway rides are better for it.

I normally get JT brand front sprockets. They're good quality and inexpensive. I think the last JT I got was through Amazon. You can go to jtsprockets.com and get the part number, then search for the best price with that number. Edit: I just went to their site, and it looks like a JTF516.15, but check me to be sure. |

I put off this mod being afraid of not being able to get going, I push the load capacity of this bike without carrying anything with me. I finally decided to go with it when deep cleaning my bike. By the time I hit the road I'd all but forgotten I swapped. Then I noticed my bike was much less noisy. The stock sprocket was worn weird and this help a lot. It gets moving fine and the highway is no problem. Wish I'd done it last year when I bought it. Mpg might be better too, not sure though as my riding is never consistant enough for a whole tank.

I don't think I've ever used a full tank in one ride, I may be mistaken though one of these days I will
