What exactly are race fairings?

I'm confused as to what people mean when they say race fairings. Is it fairings that are more aerodynamic or are they just fairings that you don't care if you rash up?

No light cutouts
Oil tight lower
Made of more easily repaired materials

Been mentioned, but to be clear:

Always made of fiberglass. Never plastic.

The simplicity is great.

On the GSX-R, there are about a dozen pieces that have to be taken off the bike to get it out of street trim. The number varies depending on what you count as a "piece." Plus at least three dozen fasteners of various kinds.

My race glass is three pieces - upper, lower and tail. The tail re-uses four screws off the stock bodywork. The rest can be fastened entirely with zip ties, if I don't mount cameras.

I've now got the conversion down to the point where I need no references and can do it in about an hour if I push, or two if I take my time. Used to take a lot longer, but I hit ebay and bought a spare wiring harness and ram tubes-- no need anymore to swap all that stuff out.

The rationale for race glass in my case is cost. I don't actually race so I could just use my street fairings, but replacing them with new OEM would cost upwards of $2,000 for a full set. My used race glass cost about $500. One repairable crash and it's pretty much paid for itself. Cheap insurance. Same goes for frame sliders and case protectors.
