New rider in Orange County

Hey All-

Glad to have found this site as I have been digging around on the net for info on what bike to start out on.
Been wanting a motorcycle for a while- I rode a 150cc scooter for almost a year until it died.

I'm taking an MSF class next week and then I will head to the dealers in search of a new 250r...if there are any left. From what I have been reading they are selling quick.
Trying not to get my hopes up. Don't really want to buy used since I'm a newbie...

Anyways thanks to this site for the wealth of information.

Yeah I've been looking on craigs list etc. When I get down to the dealer I will see if they have any. Also new ones are around 4K right? Not bad for a brand new bike.
Like I said since I'm new I don't want to buy a used bike and have it go to crap since I don't know what I'm looking for...

Welcome Jordan I completely understand your feelings about not wanting to buy used, but if you have a friend that rides, they can help you out on that front. Sadly as a new rider you're likely to drop it, and when that happens you're going to be awfully pissed at yourself for scuffing up your toy. And you won't find one for 4k in your area - more like 5k by the time the dealer adds all the fees and the taxes and what not... what sounds like a good deal quickly isn't....
I didn't listen to anyone and bought new too... got the last one in the area for the year even.... and then dropped 2 days later... would have been totaled if I'd gone through insurance... boy do I wish I hadn't spent so much on her... but I still love her and see the scratches as giving her character!

Trouble is I don't have any friends that live near me that ride so that's a big reason. On craigs list right now I'm only seeing a few 250s around 3K but they are mostly moded which makes me trust them less lol. Maybe the dealers will have some used one??? Not sure.
Also, I may want to give my new one some "character" as you said...

I wouldn't be too afraid of a used 250R. You really can save a nice chunk of change. OTD on a new on is a little over 5K - OTD on the very few used ones I found at dealers was still over 4K. I lucked out and got an '08 with under 3K miles for $2700. Used or New most stealerships will pile on the fees.

Nope...found it on Craig's List from a link on Yakaz. The guy was 3+ hours away from me but was originally from my area and actually rode it down to me with his fiance tailing him in the car to take him back. He said it would make a great last ride - double bonus - that helped me know the bike was road worthy.

Welcome to the wonderful world of riding in the OC. I was in Cypress for 7 mo last summer and loved the area. They're several riders on here from that area that can help and I am sure they will once they see another newbe from that area. Keep looking around, they may not be on CL, you are right to check at dealerships. They may know someone who has bought a bigger bike and may have one to sell. One good thing about that area, there is a bundle of dealers of all kinds there, lots of places to go.

good luck

Welcome harlumjp! I got my 2010 ninja 250 special edition at Temple City Motorsports. of off the I-10. They're selling ninjas like candy. Plus, their prices are unbeatable. I got mine for 4500 out the door! I had to pay extra 200 for the SE. Its just cosmetic difference. So u can get a brand spankin new one for just $4300. I wasn't even planning on getting one this soon. But I've been looking around and dealership here in CA can get pretty conniving. Charging assembly for around $500 and freight for the same price on top of sales tax and registration fees. OTD OC was good around $5300 (I think) but its an 09 and only red and green available. So hurry up and call them. Tell them you saw the ad on craiglist. Because when I personally visited the store the special was over but they still honored the special price because I knew about the ad. I believe I heard them say they were going to bring it back on July. Good luck. I hope you get your bike.

I went by OTD OC this past weekend and they were going out of business! 4500 sounds good, at Mission Motorsports they quoted 5200 OTD which seems a little steep. Temple City is kinda far for me- I wouldn't be comfortable riding it home that far on the freeway. Going to go check out Champion Motorsports in Costa Mesa today...
