1998 Ninja 250 - Rebuilding Carb?
hello everyone, just got the carb off. exhaust was blowing white smoke out the RIGHT exhaust pipe. upon examining the vacuum diaphragm's i noticed the right diaphragm was very warped, and the left one was perfect with no warping at all.. what is your opinion? and also, if it does have to be replaced,, what is your opinion on stuff on ebay or amazon,, because those are like 30 dollars instead of 100+ for the diaphragm! and does it 100% have to be from a ninja 250 88-07, or is this a pretty universal part from kawasakis? just curious thanks in advance

Looks like it not making a good seal on the right side near the edge. Prices for those things suck. It can be cheaper and easier to find a used carb setup. No clue on the ebay/amazon stuff.

My buddy has a Carb from a 95 Kawasaki 650. Would the Carb or diaphragm fit from that?

That part probably won't fit, but you can cross-reference the files at Bike Bandit to find out. Have you tried searching for motorcycle salvage yards in your area for the part?

the closest salvage yard is slicks in mason MI,,, and they are crooks when it comes to part costs.. (close to retail new price for scrapped) and my buddy that sold me the bike told me that when he was looking at prices for the diaphragm that people on this board offered to sell him a cleaned carb off a working bike for literally almost the same price as the diaphragm.

White smoke in the exhaust usually means a bad head gasket or piston, not anything to do with a carb.

@skipp,,,, carb in general, upon opening it, does need to be cleaned as is sat for quite some time with gas in it. in regard to the asked question, is about the diaphragm, not the white smoke, if in deed that needs to be addressed at a later date then it will be. what is your opinion on the diaphragm as many new ones i see for sale have ripples in it and arent perfect like the one on the opposing carb?

not really too worried about having to do a top end job on the engine. piston being roughly 40-50, head gasket being 15-20ish and ring set being 40ish. quite affordable

this is the only time its been started while in my possesion. there is a low idle knock if you listen closely enough, 1 cylinder not firing properly. ignition coil wire on the non-firing side is pretty chewed up. will fix that then see if the other side kicks in. first though we're cleaning the carbs so much gunk isnt getting pushed through. |

Cleaned the carbs again instead of taking the previous owners word on it. They were quite nasty inside! Started first try now with choke on. And with warmer weather the rest of the day it even started without choke. |

The pilot air screw tip was stuck in the hole and I didn't know it while unscrewing it. To back up I should mention I purchased a rebuild kit cause I needed only the gaskets. And it came with everything. So I figured while it was apart...

The tip broke off in the hole. Tried using a dentist pick tool to force it back out. Ended up bending the tip making it worse and harder to get out. The more I tried the more I widend the hole... And it's really stuck... So now... I much buy a used carb..
So again I ask.. 1988-2007. Anyone have a carb? Budget $100 plus shipping |

^^ this will need pregen needles, 105 main jets, (and possibly pilot jets?) but a jet kit (or jetsrus.com) will solve that. http://www.ebay.com/itm/95-96-KAWASA...#ht_1294wt_952 ^^ you might get lucky and they might accept $100 + shipping. It's worth messaging the seller. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-NINJA-E...#ht_500wt_1202 http://www.ebay.com/itm/K54-88-07-KA...83e81a&vxp=mtr ^^ worth asking about just the carbs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-Kawasak...#ht_500wt_1202 |

Cool it daddy-o
About your original question....that diaphragm should be OK if there are no holes or tears in it and if you can get the lip of it to sit in the channel of the carb body properly.
Whenever I do carb work with the diaphragm to be removed I place the diaphragm (attached to that plastic slide piece) in the freezer. When it's cold the lip just falls in the carb channel where it's supposed to sit. I guess it contracts slightly when cold. This works for me every time and I've done it many times. j98sprint |
