I'm new, already installed gsxr shock.
Has anyone done this and kept the original airbox? Problem I'm having is that the airbox is connected to the battery box is connected to the inner fender and I've chopped that bit up to accommodate the shock so now the airbox is mostly held into place by the wimpy spring things on the rubber boots, I'm sure using an actual pipe clamp would keep them there better but I still feel like it should have another mounting point so it's not sitting on top of the shock mount, or held up by a bungee cord like I have it now.
So I'm wondering if one of the newer airboxes will fit (the carbs seem to be the same size so it's mostly about the rest of the box) and if I can somehow mount the new airbox in a more reasonable manner, or if I should just epoxy some nuts and make some brackets to keep the old airbox in place. What do the 250 racers use for airbox mounting? Do they just keep the inner fender and battery box and so on? |

You adamant about keeping the stock box? Why don't you go with the K&N and just rig something up temporary

Yeah, the airbox is a must, I'd like to keep it legal for race regs, I've heard the gsxr shock might be a grey area if you grind down the ninja bushings but all the suspension linkage is untouched, so it should be within the spirit of the rule or whatever.

But as far as bolting it up no you don't need to change the dog bones, on the newgens you need to space them out an inch to clear the spring I guess. |

the dog bones set rear seat height and dont have anything to do with spring rate. the gsxr shock is an inch and a half shorter or something than the stock shock. which means the rear will sag if you dont get shorter dog bones

Welcome!
I installed my gsxr shock as described here. I never touched or cut my airbox during the install.

Ah, right James. That was on a newgen, sorry. I see in your profile, you have a 04. I have my pregen tore down to frame right now, I would have to go see to remind myself of the mounting points, but I do plan on installing a gsxr shock on that one as well. Assuming nothing out of the ordinary, I plan on reinforcing the mounting like I did the airbox on my 4wheeler. Zip Ties... :\

Just figured out a solution, should work ok, basically just shoved a bolt of indeterminate size and a suitable washer through the little unicorn horn on the airbox that locates it in the hanging rubber hole under the gas tank...
In addition to pipe clamps of course. |
