Road Skyline Rd. again today. Yesterday was my first dedicated twisty trip ever. Epic colors with the leaves changing. No pics. Too damn cold.

I think I could get used to this cornering stuff. Up until the twisties I never considered myself a potential Ducati guy. I think I wouldn't mind experiencing a Ducati on a nice road. You know, buy one, ride it once, then put it up for sale before I have to spend $800 on its quarterly services valve adjustment/belt change. Ha!

Don't worry. I haven't thought about it seriously. I haven't thought about how much fun a mid-90's 2V 900ss would be. Not one bit. And just because I've decided if I buy one it will be red, that doesn't mean anything. Right? Right? Damn.

I did go alone.

It felt great. I went a little farther this last time. Surprised at how tired I felt after 90 minutes of turning. I was riding like a grandpa, which I'm fine with.

I did stay on my side of the road. So improvement there. I think that my experience commuting on the bike did help me on braking before the turns.

If I felt like I was too fast in the middle of a turn (I wasn't. Just seemed like it) I would tap the front brake ever so gently (didn't squeeze it). Kind of 'on off. On off' real gentle-like. What I probably should have done is lean more. I was very conscience of coming up upon wet leaves occasionally. And a very gentle brake tap seemed less risky than more leaning, I'm sure you racers will correct me on this if I am mistaken. Please do! Constructive criticism is embraced by this newbie!

I need to find and re-read the applicable chapter in Proficient Motorcycling. It's been awhile since I picked it up and I'm sure I can find answers there as well!

Read a Twist of the Wrist 2. Brakes in turns can cause you problems.

If you are going too fast, and you are not on the outside of the turn, you can always stand the bike up, brake hard, and lean it back over. The amount of speed you can lose in that short brake can help you out a lot.

Chaos said it all, except use your rear brake in the turns as you where your front, gentle application.
Using the front in a turn can cause loss of traction

Nothing wrong with riding at grandpa speeds, I call it "not trying to be something your not".

At "grandpa speeds" and by your comments you know what you did and didn't do. While not a good habit, a bit of "teddy bear braking" at those speeds, won't be a huge issue. I bet your engine did most of the braking anyway. When you get faster, you won't be doing that so keep ridin' and it will become old hat.

Oh! And after your comfy with a casual ride in the canyons and your feel your ready to kick it up a level, definitely watch Twist of the Wrist 2 and find some riding buddies.

Got it guys. Thanks for the input. I have seen twist of the wrist 2. Need to review that again, obviously. Makes sense on gentle rear braking rather than front braking in turn.

So I must say that my curve carving has benefited me in my everyday commuting. I'm more confident.

Always remember...the only reason they ever put brake pads on cars was so people could go faster....

Think about that for a second...
