Cold blacktop and tires suck.

I performed an interesting 'test' this morning on my commute. And not on purpose. I have loud pipes, so when I take off in the morning I have gotten into a habit of coasting downhill a few blocks occasionally so I'm not starting the bike right next to the same houses every time I ride. I usually pop the clutch to get the bike started. Works slick and kinda fun.

Anywho, I popped the 'ole clutch this morning with the temperature below 50 degrees for the first time, instead of rolling the wheel and starting, the tire just skidded along. It was no big deal, but a surprise for this relatively inexperienced rider. Good lesson in being careful on cold days.

Cold pavement + cold tires + cold rider (not talking about temp cold here) = sketchy stuff

While rolling downhill there is less weight and traction on the rear tire.

The faster you release the clutch, the more violent the tension on the chain, gears and the longitudinal force on the contact patch.

The cold condition of the oil also makes the transition more abrupt.

The key in your case is a slower clutch-out.

Bounce on the rear seat when you let the clutch out, use 2nd gear instead of first.

Guys, guys. Obviously he needs to put tire warmers on while he's getting ready in the morning

Already start out in second. Good idea on the bouncing. I have been known to do this anyway out of sheer joy of the riding experience. Ha!~
