it's easy to break things. best to just take a minute and inspect everything

A four hundred dollar steering damper seems cheap now.

I've never even seriously considered one on my zx. If ever get a bike like the xr, you bet your ass that will be the first mod.

A damper is NOT a guarantee that you will NOT experience another slapper. I believe they help tremendously, but I also believe they somewhat mask when your too tight on the bars. Get one if ya can, but don't let it be a crutch. Fighting the front, will send you to the ground faster than just about anything else.

ps.. No dampers on any of my bikes, some call me crazy. Maybe I am, I just don't find it a big problem for me currently.

THIS.

I had the most wicked tank slapper at PittRace, were talking tank to tank for about 100m while on the gas down the straight with an aftermarket pitbull steering dampener that was two clicks from the hardest setting. At the time, I didn't think to much of it but my bud, who was right behind me said he thought I was going into the guardrail because of how violent it was.

I know. I never had an issue with preventing/recovering from them until i rode the xr.

Fix the issue, don't cover it up, right?

Very glad you're ok Nick and glad you weren't squiding it. I like you commitment to principles too: paying your friend for the damage. He will remember that positively and others will too.

I have no great pictures of my gear. But I can say now, my next jacket is going to be leather. This was a really rough crash (asphalt), and it destroyed all my gear. Brand new icon airmada and spidi gloves ruined. Actually a little disappointed with gloves. They tore up a lot, and these were supposed to be my track gloves. I'm glad I didn't crash at the track with these, where I can reach speeds much quicker than fifty five.

Injuries include lots of small bruises on my butt, thighs and knees. Small burns from clothing where I made contact (everywhere haha). My right elbow and shoulder is very swollen and is aching. Can't wait to wake up I'm the morning.

The bike slid for quite a bit. No serious damage. I still am not sure what caused it. I heard it may have been mechanical error - and I am inclined to believe it, since I experienced some wobbles earlier. I didn't make anything of it.

Again, I'm fine. More pictures soon.
You need to get yourself some Helimot gloves from out here in CA. You'll 1-2 track crash or 4-5 street crashes out of those babies. The only downside is they look like they are strait out of the 1980 as far as style goes but who the F**K cares.

Those Helimot gloves only protect you if you have a mullet.

1. It looks to me like the equipment did its job. Hopefully better equipment will do a better job but we won't know until we wreck it now, will we?
2. Exactly how does one create a tank slapped, why did it happen here, what are preventive and reactive actions to take? Why do we need to check front brake? (I think I know the answer to that last one.)
4. Big of you to take care of your buddy.
5. I have reported everyone on this thread to Alex. Y'all shouldn't be talking about my cousin or Chuck. Chuck is so bad if a bike considers a tank slapper it goes sheepish once it realizes Chuck is watching.

Yes. Leather jacket next time, and I'm sure there will be a next time.

Tank slappers can be started many ways. This bike was prone to head shake (basically a wobble) much more than my zx6r. This is due to the designof the suspension. Not Honda's fault, just a different machine.

Many riders give different advice. In my opinion, its most important to remain as loose as possible, and to keep your weight off the bars. I've had good outcomes with smoothly opening the throttle as the tank slapper begins (up until now). Some riders say closing the throttle smoothly helps, and I've even had someone tell me that locking the rear tire helps. I wouldn't do the last one.

I think many factors led to my crash. Rider error being one of them.
