Oil change during break in

I currently have 300 km on the bike (200 mi) and I'm doing the motoman break in with varying high RPMs and a lot of engine breaking. A lot of people recommended changing the oil often when breaking in this way. I'm planning on changing the oil tomorrow and just wanted to know if I should change the oil filter as well?

Make it a habit to always change them together, filters don't cost that much anyway

You should always change the filter when changing the oil on anything. However, Kawi does not suggest changing the oil frequently during break in. You'll be changing it again at 600 mi, kind of silly to do it now...

Thank guys, I'll change the filter as well

Resoweb, I'm not following the Kawasaki guideline for break-in and apparently when you push the RPMs during break-in there's more metal shavings that fall through early on. That's what I'm reading anyway, will find out later if that's the case. Hopefully it won't look anything like this

So I went to Canadian Tire and picked up some Gastrol oil (not many choices for 10W40).

Went to the Kawi dealer to get the drain plug washer and ended up buying 2 quarts of the Kawasaki oil and used that instead.

So it went very smoothly but when I checked the oil there was definitely some shavings at the bottom of the pan.

Not sure if it's too much or what. I even tore the oil filter but did not see much shavings there.

In any case I will do another oil change in 300 kms and see if there's a difference.

Did my oil change at 50 miles and the pan looked the same way. Had a mechanic friend do it cuz I just wanted to see how it was done the first time... turns out since the redesigned this bike you have to take off the side fairings.. which was like 9 of those press in bolt things.. but anyways went back the next day and he showed me the filter that he cut out and let dry.. could see quite a bit of metal there also.

that's nasty

looks like you are paning for gold

i did mine at 100kms, 500kms, will be at 3000kms

i will be letting the dealer do the scheduled first 1000kms service and the second service at 6000kms.

then ill be changing the oil at every 5000kms with 10-40 semi syn with ester
