Battery Connection & Tachometer Problems

New to riding, don't know much, and I'm having trouble with my battery connection. After 30 mins of riding or so, I have to constantly keep adjusting the battery connection. I got a new battery from Auto Advance, and the screws don't actually tighten, it just kind of slides in. I checked on the web, and it seems like all replacement batteries are like that. Am I missing something?

Any help would be super appreciated! My bike is a 2009 250r, rode maybe 500 miles on it?

Also, not sure if it's related, but my tachometer keeps spazzing around 60 mph, it'll hit max then quickly to 5000-6000 then spaz to max again..

Welcome Jackie!

Battery issues and the jumpy tach are most likely closely related. Your connections should be solid and not work loose by normal riding.

Can you post a pic or link of the battery? I have only seen screw down type batteries for bikes. I have seen some strange special stuff on batteries for mowers, tractors and other equipment though.

Yup - a pic would help. There is enough vibration on a motorcycle that the battery connections need to be uber-tight to prevent problems. I've only seen motorcycle batteries with nuts/bolts to tighten, so I'm curious what you're dealing with.

typically there is a square nut under the connection terminal for the battery. the top bolt screws into that nut which is held in place by the terminal walls. it could simply be gone.

^what he said. Odds are, they fell out while you were handling the battery. So grab a flashlight and look around.

Yup. Missing the square nuts that the bolts screw into. Should be easy to find some replacements at an auto parts or hardware store.
