My Close Call

(Sorry if I stuck this in the wrong place, Alex... it's luckily NOT a crash thread.)

Today I took a "detour" through Rock Creek Park on my way home, which I've looped around before a number of times - it's close and has a few nice turns. I was feeling pretty good, and took one of the sharper turns a little faster than I have in the past:

I found myself going a little wide and while I didn't cross the yellow lines, I was pretty close to them. And right as I hit the Apex, an SUV came around the courner. I had a brief "oh $%*" moment, and pressed a little harder to get through the turn, when my footpeg started to drag. Made it though alright, but Gah! That was a little to close of a call for my linking.

What I did wrong: Entered the turn a little too fast and a little too early, causing me to go wide. I also didn't shift my weight, which cause me to lean too much, leading to the the peg scrape.

What I did right: Kept looking through the turn, stayed in controlled, and didn't let survival reactions kick in (as Keith Code describes:roll off the gas, grab a handful of brakes, target fixate, etc.)

In other news, earlier this morning, after having just re-potted my aloe plant, I totally tripped and ate it going up the stairs. You know when you sometimes trip and break into a run to regain your footing. I basically did that while going up the stairs, in an effort to save the plant. The result?: I ended up sprawled over the span of like 6 steps, arms stretched out in front of me, and freshly potted plant on the landing on it's side, with a giant pile of moist dirt splayed out behind it.

All I can say is that you managed both situations with much grace and excellent display of skills, Sarah.

Nice job handling Rock Creek, Sarah! I really like Ridge Road. I have every inch of it memorized, as I used to use it to commute from Silver Spring to Georgetown. When I can't get out of town, but need to take some nice turns, I tear up and down a few times. I admit I've had my share of 'oh sh*t' moments on that exact turn. Glad you kept it together.

Yea, I rarely have the time to actually get out of town for a real ride, so if the weather's nice and I have a spare hour, that's typically where I go. I knew the turn was coming, too. sigh.

Thanks, lgk.

Good to hear that aside from raising your pulse a bit everything turned out fine. Sounds like you already figured out what you need to correct too, which is a huge plus.

At least you didn't trip up on the stairs because your cat tried to kill you. My old landlord's cat did that one night and he seriously looked like he lost badly in a barfight.

Glad you didn't find yourself getting too friendly with that SUV. I think considering the circumstances you handled yourself pretty well. As they say, all's well that ends well.
