I like to use the kill switch and then the turn the key because it makes me feel like a fighter jet pilot

When I pull into my school MC parking lot or if someone's sitting on the bench behind the section of sidewalk I park my bike on at work I'll normally use the kill switch that way I don't annoy anyone. If I don't have anyone behind me or I'm parking anywhere else, I'll normally use the key. Though sometimes I'll just be bored and use the kill switch to keep my headlights on for fun.
And most of the time when I come home from work for some reason I normally will use the sidestand kill switch. It really just depends on my mood and what I feel like doing.

We could add a row of switches to our dash board that serve no purpose, and flick them all down before finally hitting the kill switch

I've been riding bikes for 34 years, only ever used kill switch in emergency, (for instance if oil light comes on).

As teenagers we always thought it 'highly amusing' to flip the kill switch on a mates bike whilst it was parked, then see if they could suss out why it wouldn't start when they got on. (Well, it seemed funny when you were only 17

).

be going fast enough that you can engine brake for a few seconds, turn the kill switch off with the throttle wide open, wait a second, close throttle and turn kill switch back on. BANG. it wouldn't surprise me if someone sets themselves on fire trying this. makes a cool fireball out the exhaust

1. Signal

4. Swerve across their lane

Oh... ENGINE cut-off. I use the key.

Just out of curiousity, I was wondering how everyone shuts down their bike after a ride.

I've always just put it into neutral and turned off the key at the end of a ride. My buddy, who started riding last year always uses the kill switch to turn of the bike. I always found this annoying, but I'm pretty sure it was something they taught in the MSF course.

It annoyed me because I'm not used to it. If I went to go ride his bike or if we switched bikes I would always think something was wrong when I went to start the bike. It would always take me a second to remember the killswitch. Then when I picked up my 300 on Tuesday the guy at the dealer shut it down with the kill switch after a quick start up check, and when I go to ride it away I hit the starter and get nothing... stupid kill switch.

BTW what is the point of doing this? Some sort of safety measure I'm guessing.

Yes, it's a safety thing. On a race bike with the ignition still in place, you MUST have a functional kill switch in case the key is all bent to hell or ignition fails to shut the bike down. It is something they cover in the MSF class, it's part of FINE-C. Might as well get used to it, they are here to stay.

ps. I use my kill switch. It's common for me to forget to turn the key off. lol

I understand doing it on a race bike. My dirt bike only has a kill switch.

And I understand the need to have one on a street bike, but I've always looked at it as a last resort. Something that is there for the real oh sh*t moments.

I still don't get how it's safer to shut it down with the kill switch. Is the bike gonna try to start itself while sitting around?

I tend to leave my bike in gear so I always use the kill switch. If I got used to using the key when I went to turn off my shadow it would end up being a contortionist act

Kill switch and off. I used to park outside of a best buy where I worked and people would **** with the bikes all day. If one day a mom sat her little brat on mine and I forgot the key somehow, it would be me getting sued if he turned it on.
Same reason it's always in gear and the handlebars locked. If it falls on someone, it ain't my fault.

Get used to use it, it is a good thing.

Being able to kill the engine without taking your hand off the bar is very good.

It also conserves the key switch because the little sparks happen at the kill switch, which is beefed up for that and easier to remove as well (access to the key switch requires grinding rivets).

Caveat: discipline yourself to turn the key switch off each time you move away from the bike, so you battery will not get drained down by the coils and head and dash lights.

Let me answer this question with other questions. How far do you have to move your hands to kill the bike with the switch? How fast can you shut it down this way vs the key. How far do you have to move your hand to kill it with the key? What controls do not receive input while your hand is not in place during an "OH SH*T" moment?

That and the clutch's are micro-switches and they may need soon replacement when used as kill switches frequently (due to peak currents).

That is because you have never found yourself down in the slide zone of a corner and needed to shut your bike off quickly and then run to the side of the track. When in doubt, leave it running or not and get yourself safe. A bike on fire is another example. Fire + crash is worse, so kill it while braking and gtfo. lol

That, or; clutch in, first gear, turn key off, let go of clutch, turn bars, lock position.

Kill switches should only be used to kill the bike in an emergency, hence why it's a big red button.

Key ignitions are designed to be used to turn off the bike, this is how every bike manufacturer says to do it in the book. RTFM.

My bike has a vehicle down sensor that kills the bike if you crash or drop.
