Depends on the size and their rules. The 250 is about as big as you really want to go on the kart track. Not sure the closest to you (would have to google) but you should be able to find one within an hours drive to most larger cities. I have to drive about hour and 10 mins to my local one that is big enough to allow bikes AND is NOT an oval. Ask around, most of your sumo riders know where one is.

The cart track near me does not allow any sportbikes bigger than the 50cc models (nsr50, ysr50). Aprilia rs125, Ninja 250, not allowed.
But you want to run your Aprilia SVX 550 that weighs 300 lbs and makes 70hp, go right ahead.

I'd wait until right around the dead of winter and buy a stock new-gen 250 to slowly get ready for racing ( it's my dream and goal). Or buy the 50 for our daughter's first bike as she finally got the training wheels off! Hmmmm maybe three used dirty bikes for cheap.

Of course, as indicated by my username, I'd stay purebred Kawi and wedge a KX500 motor in there. 55-60 hp, snap your neck torque across the tachometer, a lighter engine and you'd really only need a little dry cell (jumpstarter) battery if one at all, since it's kick-start. You can get a good running KX for well under 2k. Or maybe a 600? Problem is you'll be getting way back into the 90's before you come up with a decent one for 2 grand.

If you did want to go the supermoto route..... You could just throw some decent street rubber on the stock wheels. There's actually some good choices out now, not as many or as great as 17s but still... road rider, distanzia, bt45, 705, all decent tires with enough grip to get your knee down if you wanted to. The Shinko 705s and Avon Distanzias have a semi-dirt tread pattern too so you'd get a little extra grip off road than you would with regular street tires. Then you could save up for 17s later if you really felt the need to have them.
I personally think they look badass, so I'd definitely want them, but whether they actually handle better than 18/21s seems to come down to opinion more than anything. Most likely bike dependent too. 2 grand could get you a nice project sport bike, but it's not gonna get you any sport bike that will be dead reliable from the get go. IMO the best balance of performance/reliability/value would be a CBR600F3, preferably the 97/98 model. 2 grand should easily get you one in about as good of condition as they come. Of course around here people have them listed for a lot more... But if I were going to get a 90s sport bike, I'd probably aim for the original style CBR900RR. Ohhhhhhh yeaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Or maybe the 919cc generation... They're super sexy too but not nearly as classic looking. |

'97 CBR600F3's are freaking awesome bikes!!!! If I could find one in good condition and replace the worn out shocks/tires/whatever, I'd do it. Those are great street bikes.

I'm actually surprised at what's available for 2k out here in the SF Bay Area... there are some decent sportbikes... I can only imagine what may be available during the off-season.
I do have my eyes on a couple CBR's...

Can't go wrong with a Honda. Just keep in mind for $2k it WILL need a good going over, even if the PO said they took perfect care of it and they weren't lying, better safe than sorry.
What kind of riding do you do? And what will be the purpose of this bike? Will it be replacing your 250 as a daily rider or be a weekend bike, etc? |

I'm just wondering because a 600SS is not the most comfortable thing to commute. Not necessarily in terms of seating, but heat. My CBR gets up to 225 degrees when going slow/stopped and it is very toasty. On 90+ days it won't get below 190 and that's going 70mph+. On days like that the outside temps + heat from the bike make it get so hot the gas tank slightly burns the inside of my legs :P that's the worst of the worst though, most of the time even if it is running pretty warm it's not really uncomfortable.

Another reason why I like my 300. Even sitting in traffic on a hot day isn't that bad.

Hey Mr Horsepower, show me a CBR F4i that makes more power than an R6.
Get off it, they're all about even in terms of quality. These things just get beat on an wrapped around poles more often than they get kept by an owner long enough to see that many miles. |

Show me a sportbike that you'll take off-road, or up a set of stairs, or hit jumps with.

...I'm not butthurt in the slightest. The odds of any sport bike seeing that many miles is low because of how often they get wrecked.

Ah an old schooler 250. I already have a new gen so there is no point for me to have that. I don't see the appeal of having multiple entry level bikes let alone a pregen. I was thinking like a 600cc or more which goes back to what I said and if that is truly the case then no thanks. I'll sit on the cash. If I get the itch then I can pad it and get another bike. Though the CBR600F3/F4 are close at around 2500 from craigslist ads in my area.

True, but my post was simply an answer to your question "what can I really buy?" You never said it had to be something you really wanted, or even needed, after all the original point of the thread was what would you do with $2000 to spare
plus I'm kinda biased since I don't own a bike yet...
