Four Seasons Saddlesore - 2015

Last year, I set out to accomplish an IBA ride that had very few names under it: the Four Seasons ride.

Fall ride

Didn't write a report for this one as it was really uneventful on its own. I got up early and headed out. Since I've been across Nevada on 80 so many times, I had nothing new to add or show as I made my way east towards Wendover. Crossing the Bonneville Salt Flat was both dull (the interstate) and interesting (the landscape) and little yellow flowers still covered the shoulders of the road what the majority of the dry lake bed was flooded.

Once I got beyond Salt Lake City, things got more interesting. The I-80 went from a wide main thoroughfare to a small two lane highway, so small I kept checking the signage for both the shield and directions to Cheyenne to endure I was on the right road! The landscape going towards Wyoming got surreal, almost like a painting, and the rolling hills as I crossed the border made me curious to look at everything.

Alas, I had to get back, so after a short photo shoot and a quick gas up, I turned around and began the long ride home.

Winter ride

This was by far the toughest of the series. Winter hadn't really settled into the Great Basin yet, mostly content to hang out on top of the Sierra Nevada rather than come down into the valleys. But it was still freaking cold and windy.

My Dad is the one who came up with the clever idea of starting later than usual, then catching a few hours sleep during the coldest part of the night, before continuing on the next morning. So I rode from 12p-1am, slept until 5am, and finished off the last bit the next morning. Worked out brilliantly!

The only new part of this route I'd not done before was the short leg between the Big Bend of the Colorado River state park and the little casino/resort right at the tippy tip of Nevada. I was tempted to ride across the Colorado for the heck of it, but since I knew it would be getting cold as I headed north, I felt time was too important for silliness.

Completed certificate

The neat thing about this is not only am I one of 14 riders who have completed this ride so far, but according to the web page printout the IBA sends with every certificate, I am also the first woman to do so. Go me and my bad self!
