actually... yes, she does But she doesn't ride a motorcycle, so she thinks it's awesome that I'm riding. She lives really close to Watkins Glen and we could likely use her house as a place to crash for a night or two if we wanted to go to Watkins Glen for a track day

I mentioned track day at Watkins Glen to her a week ago, and she was like YES DO IT, IT HAS RIGHT TURNS!! Cool aunt

Ok, when are you thinking? I am at about 10k this year in bike stuff and time at the track so gunna be hard for me to make it out after Oct. and my budget is trashed. But I think I can scratch up some paper for this. Time is my enemy though....

I will be making plans once I know more about internships and such. Unfortunately it is hard to make travel plans when you have no idea where you will be located for the summer.

Looks fun guys. Wish I could get out to a track day but I need a suit and the seasons coming to a close quickly so I don't see it happening. I'm hoping next spring I'll be able to get out on a track, even if just for the experience.

yes! Next season sounds good!

csmith12 has that extra suit I borrowed. You can rent one from Mid-O for like $50

I think for next season we've already got Filipe_The_Ant interested in going with us. I for sure am itching to get back out there. Should we tentatively plan for you to attend a day with us? The more the merrier!

For sizing I'll have to look up what measurements are needed for one since I have no idea. I'm 5'8 and 155 lbs if that helps at all. And I'd be down for a track day if I can get the bike prepped and everything in time, but I need a different rear tire. The tire on my 600 now is a cheap Vee Edge tire that I don't trust that the previous owner put on. And on average how much is a track day plus other expenses?

Mid-O is expensive.

$185 for the day + your comfort items + gas. And you WILL want some of the picks Kyle Hunter takes. He is amazing. I can get you a deal on a set of Q2's if your into those.

I'll be going next summer. You have plenty of time if you want to go with me

here's mid-ohio's page on motorcycle track days. there's a sizing chart for speed and strength gear on there as well. A track day there is like $195 I think. But you get a $10 discount if you type in FORUM or something like that.

With his size, I will have no problem getting him a suit. If you have some leathers before next year, the white leathers will fit him better than they fit you. But if you need them again, I have 3 sets. I got us covered, literally. hahahahahah

What kind of deal can you get on the q2's? I'm not looking to buy them yet but probably will sometime during the off season. And I'd like to get leathers but with other expenses that come first I doubt I could but renting them is a good idea.

Few things I'm curious about though:
I thought track helmets had to be Snell certified but Mid-O's site says Snell or DOT so I'm assuming my EXO-500 is fine for track days, or does it vary by track?
And how does a track day work for a first timer, all classes and some track time?
And lastly (for now), should frame sliders be removed?

Thanks for the input guys.

Sliders are up to you.

The EXO500 is DOT, ECE, and SNELL correct?? that's the helmet I was looking at for this winter because I liked the fit.

I'll have to defer to chris on the Q2's.

they have 20-minute sessions alternating with classroom time, and then a session off for resting. the class time isn't super formal, just kinda time to chat with the control riders. They're super helpful and are great about answering questions and explaining the drill you'll be doing the next session. then they let you loose for the afternoon to have some fun.

Just don't forget to go to the first 2 sessions of class time like I did

EDIT: the exo500 is ECE and DOT approved. You'll be fine with that. The ECE certification is also a good certification that carries some weight.

Don't worry about renting unless that is what you want. I got you yo. Your lid is fine, keep your sliders or remove them, your choice and you will receive just as much track time as anyone else. Although novice is much more controlled and bound to the classes that happen between sessions. For example, you will play leapfrog for a session to get use to passing and leading. They cover a couple of skills during class and then you roll for a session to practice. Chone can tell you more, I have never rode novice there.

The shop in Cincinnati does a set of q2's installed for $240. All you have to do is roll up on your bike. But I am sure they will hook you up for a track day install or ship em to you (free) if you can't make it to the Cincinnasty! hahahahhaha

If you had a suit I could borrow that'd be awesome, but would it fit a back protector in it?

Most suits have space for a back protector. The suit I borrowed from Chris had a pocket for a protector, but it also had enough space (i'm skinny) that I could wear a strap-on back protector inside it comfortably.

Alright thanks again guys. Sounds like I'll have to save up and do my research over the winter for which event(s) I want to go to and how to prepare myself and the bike.

And that $240 isn't bad for tires but Cincy is a long drive for that ha.

Chone used my ICON stryker all day. I wouldn't let him go out without it. If your in my pit you will ride with as much protection as I can get you, even if I have to give up my own.

and thank you for that Chris!!! You made my mom a little less worried.

Chris gave up about 2 minutes of the first few sessions while we did the hand-off with the back protector, which was awesome. Thankfully we finally borrowed another one from one of the control riders.

I have a knox contour back protector that I wear on every ride I just don't have the chest piece that you can get for it.

I will be there Oct. 1st but it's not open to the public that day. Because I am already paid for 2 days at Putnam Park, unless I win the loto, no more days there for me this year.

Got 5 days planed for next year but dates are not solid.

I'm planning on 1 at Mid-o next season, and likely 1 at Putnam as well since csmith12 likes Putnam on the 250 and potentially could be a control rider in the novice class there.

aaaaand maybe watkins glen if my aunt is cool with that/gets my christmas gift hint

we can start another thread for 2013 when the time is right.

Look here, suits should start going cheap near the end of the season. Sometimes crazy deals for high quality stuff. I got my A* 2 piece for $150 lol. What do you think your suit budget will be?

Try on a 40, that should fit your pretty well depending on brand. Leave some room for a substitute back/chest protector unless it comes with one that you like.

I will keep an eye out for you locally too.

Suit budget; a couple hundred, preferably under $300. Not a ton, or else I might as well just get a new SS suit for like $700 on ebay.

Thanks for the links, I'll keep on those. Haha I do that with google all the time, I never thought to do it with craigslist postings though.

hmm, not the best suit, but it comes in a 40, and is on sale for $300

If a 42 is better, white would be an option Looking at their sizing chart, 42 might be better just on my height. Damn being skinny and not short...
